He has been tarred as a French colonialist who spread syphilis to underage girls in the South Seas. But, writes the author of an acclaimed new book, fresh discoveries challenge this view of the artist – and even show him as a hero

A CANVAS OF SOUND & COLOUR

Music and art have always been connected, and Tom Burton’s new album, Songbook ’126-’127, is no exception.

Tom, co-host of Modern Art Is Rubbish, has created an album, that we think mirrors the energy of Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition VII (1913)—layered, expressive, and full of movement.

Kandinsky saw music as colour in motion, and this album feels like its own kind of abstract painting—unexpected, emotional, and alive.

Now streaming on Spotify—go experience it for yourself.

Tamara de Lempicka: The Queen of Art Deco

Caught in action! This 1929 photo shows Tamara de Lempicka in her Paris studio, working on her masterpiece Portrait of Tadeusz Lempicki. With its bold lines, cinematic lighting, and timeless elegance, her work embodies the glamour of Art Deco.

Lempicka’s portraits captured the elite of 1920s Paris.

Her mix of Cubism & Classicism made her a modern icon.

She painted her first husband Tadeusz Lempicki in this striking noir-inspired look.

First: Painter John Singer Sargent in his Paris studio, circa 1884. Behind him is Madame X, the portrait that caused a scandal. He stands facing The Breakfast Table, still in progress.

Second: Madame X (1884), an elegant yet controversial portrait. Originally, the strap of her dress slipped off her shoulder, but due to the uproar, Sargent repainted it.

Third: Breakfast in the Loggia (1910), a peaceful domestic scene filled with soft light and quiet luxury.

From high society drama to tranquil beauty, Sargent’s work captured both extremes.

AI & Creativity: A Surprisingly Bright Future?

Just listened to a fascinating and refreshingly optimistic in parts discussion on the future of human creativity and AI, featuring the artist Sarah Pope on Times Radio.

It made me think of my early days experimenting with AI, which led to these stunning images of George Michael, Prince, and David Bowie celebrating together in heaven…

I mean, who wouldn’t want to be at this gathering?

If you’re curious about the discussion, start listening from 01:38:10 on Times Radio Catch-Up with Kate Borsay. Definitely worth a listen!
