Guy Kawasaki spent decades making Apple stores enchanting. Senior living communities spend $50M+ on buildings that still feel institutional. What's the disconnect?

In this episode, the legendary marketer, author, and host of Remarkable People explains why being "better" isn't enough - and what senior living operators can steal from Apple's playbook to create spaces people actually want to live in.

What we cover:
- The ONE counterintuitive design principle from Apple that senior living desperately needs
- Why "different beats better" matters more in senior living than anywhere else
- How to create enchantment in an industry built on risk aversion
-What it would actually take to make someone like Guy consider senior living

If you've ever wondered why your $50M community doesn't feel remarkable, this conversation will challenge everything you thought you knew.

As always, we'll be back in the new year with more great episodes, but for now, tune in for the 2025 finale of hosted by Steve Moran.

Big pivots don’t always feel bold in the moment.

Sometimes they feel risky, uncomfortable, and deeply personal.

This one started with a conversation at home and a 50% pay cut, and it led to building something far more meaningful. A true pivot that set Merrill Gardens in motion and shaped an entire career. ❤️

Hospitality vs. Care… can they really coexist in senior living?
Here’s the truth ⬇️

For years, our industry has treated these two concepts like they’re on opposite teams.
✨ Hospitality = experience, amenities, delight
đź’ś Care = safety, dignity, clinical excellence

But the best communities aren’t choosing one or the other — they’re blending both.

Because older adults don’t stop wanting beauty, joy, and agency simply because they need support.
And caregivers can absolutely deliver high-quality care while still creating human moments that feel warm, welcoming, and elevated.

The real question is this:
👉 Are we willing to have healthy, respectful debates about what’s working, what isn’t, and what needs to change?

Our industry grows when we talk—honestly, openly, passionately.

If we want senior living to evolve… we have to normalize conversations that challenge the status quo.

Hospitality + Care isn’t a competition.
It’s a partnership.
And when we get it right, residents feel it — and so do our teams.

🎉 We’re excited to share some big news!

Introducing our newest show Pivot with Pettit!

🔥 What if the biggest opportunity in senior living isn’t care… but competition?

And what if the next decade belongs to the operators bold enough to reinvent everything we think we know?

On the debut episode of Pivot with Pettit, Steve sits down with legendary leader Bill Pettit — and this conversation is a masterclass.

Bill shares:

🏡 Why senior living must stop building “care buildings” and start building residential lifestyles

👥 Why Boomers will demand something entirely different than their parents

đź’° Why complacency is quietly killing innovation

💥 Why hospitality and care are not in conflict — they elevate each other

📉 What failures taught him more than success ever did

🚶‍♀️ And why the “aging alone” generation changes everything

This episode challenges assumptions, sparks debate, and opens the door to the biggest growth opportunity our field has seen in decades.
