Feb 3 - Black History Month Fact

A historian helped establish Black History Month

Historian Carter G. Woodson, the creator of what we presently know as Black History Month, worked passionately to establish the event in an effort to provide an education on the origins, struggles and achievements of African Americans in United States history. Originally, it existed as seven days of commemoration, first established in 1926 and called “Negro History Week.” Woodson penned more than a dozen books, including 1933’s, The Mis-Education of the Negro.

Feb 2 - Black History Fact

The first federally-recognized Black History Month was observed in 1976.

For years, ASALH campaigned for the federal government to acknowledge Black History Month. Come 1976, President Gerald Ford finally deemed Black History Month a public holiday, and every U.S. POTUS since then has recognized it, too.

Feb 1 - Black History Fact

Black History Month began as Negro History Week in 1926.

In 1926, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, aka ASALH), organized the first national Negro History Week; about 40 years later, in the late 1960s, the holiday had developed into Black History Month, which was observed on many college campuses, as per History.

Black history deserves year‑round recognition because it is inseparable from American history, shapes every part of modern life, and helps us understand both our past and our present. Limiting it to one month overlooks the depth, diversity, and ongoing impact of Black contributions across culture, science, politics, and social progress. -obliterhate.org
