We really don’t know how this happened, but somehow Bronx-based visual artist, author, punk singer, and high school art teacher John Vasquez Mejias agreed to carve the cover of our new issue by hand. It’s a double-sided work of mad genius and we could not be more grateful for the time and meticulous effort he dedicated to making PMA009 the most beautiful magazine since the invention of eyeballs. Somehow he turned our print magazine full of inspirational stories and examples of the best humanity has to offer into a bonafide prized ARTIFACT.

We of course encourage you to get your hands on a copy before they sell out, but first you should take a minute to check out John’s extensive body of work over at , and his tremendous punk band .starts. His handmade, heartfelt work is something to literally behold, and once you do, your life will never be the same.

Thomas Dupere is a self taught New England based mixed media artist. Working in a loose style that takes influences from the creativity of 1980’s / 90’s skateboard / punk & hip hop cultures. He has also been a life-long skateboarder and is currently putting his muscle where his mind is by building skateparks with the outstanding skatepark design/build firm, Artisan Skateparks.

His contribution to PMA009 is on page 4 opposite of our art contributors page.

Check his amazing work out at and show him some love!

Matt was born in Boise in the ‘70s and moved to Seattle in the ‘80s to sn**ch up a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Cornish College of the Arts. Now he lives with his wife and yellow lab in West Seattle. When not working as a carpenter or skateboarding, he spends the rest of his time in the shop building sculpture, and making the most beautiful custom skateboards you have (n)ever ridden.

Matt made a major contribution to PMA009 by hand painting our endpages with such detail and concern that we are still discovering hidden elements every time we look at it (and we’ve seen it a LOT!)

Steph Littlebird is a Chinook and Kalapuya illustrator, painter, writer, curator, and Indigenous rights advocate whose illustrative work ranges all the way from children’s books like the critically acclaimed “My Powerful Hair” to museum exhibits. They were keen to share their experiences in those spaces and beyond.

As a part of EJ Miller Larson’s epic PMA009 article about Indigenous artists using their talents to create lasting and meaningful change, Steph’s piece entitled “Native Butterfly” is one of the most beautiful and powerful things we’ve ever seen.

You must go look and see what Steph is up to, because it’s a lot! Head over to and soak up her irresistable work!

Jeffrey approached us about doing something special for the magazine. He wrote: “I was inspired by PMA’s mission of telling stories of people who have followed their passion and found out that being true to yourself is the only way to be free. I wanted to share the message that in order to be a hero, you don’t need to have superpowers— being a hero is just being a good person.” You are our hero Jeffrey Garcia!

Jeffrey’s contribution to PMA009 is an incredible two-page comic spread that proves he’s not just a talented artist, but he’s also a wonderful storyteller.

Eric Reynolds is the Vice-President and Associate Publisher of Seattle’s Fantagraphics Books. He has edited books by a Who’s Who of contemporary graphic novelists, including Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns, Joe Sacco, Ellen Forney, Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, and Gary Panter. His cartooning credits include Fantagraphics Books, The New York Times, Mojo, Nike, DC Comics, and others. His writing has appeared in The Comics Journal, Juxtapoz, The Stranger, and elsewhere, and he is an Eisner and Inkpot Award winner for his contributions to the medium of comics.

Eric’s feature “Surfin’” comic in PMA009 takes us back to a simpler time when surfing was a creative and dirty undertaking that pushed the boundaries of what a “sport” could look and feel like.

Paddle on over to Eric’s modest art zone on the Instagram:

Landa Lakes is a Chickasaw writer, musician, activist and artist. They are a drag queen and community organizer whose work spans decades and transcends genres. They founded multiple drag performance groups along the West Coast, serve on the board of the Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits, and co-founded the Weaving Spirits Native Art Festival.

As a part of EJ MIller Larson’s PMA009 article about Indigenous artists using their talents to create lasting and meaningful change, Landa’s portrait brings us into a world where magic and transformation rule the day.

Images of death feature prominently in Mike Egan’s work, but it is supertrue that without life there can be no death. And in the brightly-hued iconographic deathscapes that Egan transfers so eloquently from his imagination to canvas, the melancholy agreement between death and life is on display in a vibrating dimensional contrast.

We are so lucky to have had the opportunity to feature Mike in our latest issue with a four page expose written by PMA Senior Editor Jeff Braimes.
