Festive spirit isn’t the only thing on the rise in Wells - vehicle thefts are up too, and police are urging drivers not to gift-wrap their belongings for opportunistic thieves.

Unlocked cars and valuables left on display are being targeted in car parks and tourist spots. So unless you want to walk home with shopping and no stereo, now’s the time to double-check those doors and hide the good stuff.

Collett Park is meant for prams and picnics, not high-speed e-bike chases - but that hasn’t stopped a few Sur-Ron riders treating it like a motocross track.

Police in Shepton Mallet are cracking down after a surge in illegal use of the powerful off-road bikes, which aren't road-legal without insurance or registration. Now patrols are stepping up and warnings are getting sharper: ride it wrong, and you could lose it.

Wells drivers, brace yourselves: College Road will be closed for two days from 15 January while Somerset Highways puts in a new pedestrian crossing.

Emergency vehicles can still get through, but the rest of us will be doing the scenic tour via diversions. It’s all part of the city’s “infrastructure upgrades” – translation: more cones, more chaos, but eventually fewer near-misses at crossings.
