This Friday and Saturday, 30-31 May, Yamatji writer Mabel Gibson will be a guest speaker at the First Nations Writers Festival in Townsville, Queensland. The festival celebrates First Nations voices, stories and heritage, including cultures of the Greater Pacific region.

Last year the festival had hundreds of viewers across Australia and the Pacific watching via the live broadcast.

We wish Mabel safe travels and will be cheering her on from WA!

Beautiful day on Ballardong Noongar land for the York Regional Writers Weekend 📚 Huge thanks to for her brilliant insights and excellent anecdotes and analogies during our Meet the Author session, and to Will Yeoman for facilitating it all with good humour and putting us at ease. Many thanks to everyone who came to the session—your questions and comments were encouraging and heartwarming. Thanks also to the absurdly talented circle of musicians around the fire tonight who serenaded us after dinner with their gorgeous voices and instruments. 📣Upcoming event: York Regional Writers Weekend, 24 & 25 May

Looking for an excuse to visit the charming and historic Wheatbelt town of York this month? Why not make a day trip or overnight stay and enjoy all of the wonderful events on offer for this year’s York Regional Writers Weekend. Over two full days, you can purchase day passes that allow you to enjoy a diverse range of panels, workshops and other literary events.

On Saturday, 24 May at 2pm, NPP publisher and editor Laura Keenan will be in conversation with author Alison Middleton at The Rookery as part of the ‘Meet the Author’ series. They’ll discuss writing and editing, with a particular focus on Romance genre and the latest issue of the little journal.

Writers in WA, if the only chips you’re dreaming of lately are:

Then you might not be getting enough quality sleep.

But fear not. In exactly one month, the birds of Night Parrot Press are back at The Claisebrook Bar to fulfil your literary fever dreams by performing their best seagull impressions as they hover over HOT CHIPS and squawk excitedly about the delights of short-form creative writing. If you or someone you know needs a reason to write, surrounded by like-minded creatives, Flash and Chips is just what the Muse ordered!

Join Linda Martin and Laura Keenan, publishers at Night Parrot Press, for a 90-minute workshop designed to introduce you to flash, microfiction and micro memoir (stories of 500 words or fewer). We’ll share recent examples by international and local writers, provide inspiring prompts and helpful tips for writing and editing, and allow you plenty of time to craft your own stories.

These informal workshops are open to established, emerging and new writers, and are guaranteed to be insightful, friendly and fun.

Please join us in congratulating Gillian O’Shaughnessy for securing a grant from DLGSC to write and publish her debut collection of flash fiction!

Gillian O’Shaughnessy is a journalist, moderator and author who lives in Walyalup/Fremantle. She spent 25 years with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as a broadcaster, senior reporter and editor, and is a former curator of Writers Weekend for Perth Festival. 

During COVID, Gillian was one of a merry band of writers who would join us online for fortnightly writing prompts and feedback. We had already published one of her pieces in our first anthology of flash, Once: A Selection of short short stories, and it was clear to us then that she was headed for great things in the flash fiction world.

Fast forward to 2025, and Gill is an award-winning, internationally recognised flash fiction author and respected submissions editor at Smokelong Quarterly, the longest-running journal dedicated to flash in the world.

We are so thrilled that Gillian will not only be writing a solo collection of flash, but also undertaking professional development with Night Parrot Press to gain in-depth experience in the publishing industry.

Stay tuned for updates and we can’t wait to see her book out in 2026!

Congratulations to the winners of the Double-Take Novelette Award! 🦜🦜

On Friday night, Rashida Murphy and Karleah Olson were announced as the winners of the Double-Take Novelette Award for their manuscripts ‘Old Ghosts’ and ‘Bloodwood’, respectively. We were absolutely thrilled to recognise their talents and their fearless narratives.

We created the Double-Take Novelette award to celebrate new stories in an under-recognised form in Australian publishing. In 2024 we successfully raised funds to cover author prize money and pre-production costs. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure state government funding at the end of 2024 that would have covered costs to produce, print and distribute the work of the two novelette winners. But this news didn’t stop us, because we are committed to publishing literature that doesn’t fit into mainstream publishing models. 

We have a dynamic publishing concept in mind, and your support can make it happen. Not only will your commitment give two Western Australian writers the opportunity to have their stories published as a book, but it will also let the broader community know that the writing community supports new forms of writing and bold approaches that don’t rely on traditional models and expectations.

🦜Double-Take Novelette Award 🦜

We have two winners! ⚡️🎉💕

Congratulations to Rashida Murphy and Karleah Olsen for taking out the double award tonight with their novelettes:

Old Ghosts—Rashida Murphy
Bloodwood—Karleah Olson

We are thrilled to announce that their novelettes have each won the top prize of $2500 and they will work with Night Parrot Press to publish their manuscripts.

A huge thank you to all of the incredibly talented shortlisted authors who submitted their novelettes—we loved each of your stories and were moved by them.

Special thanks to the judging panel of Aksel Dadswell, Gillian O’Shaughnessy, Ros Thomas (and Laura Keenan) who gave their time and expertise to read and select the shortlisted manuscripts and two winners. It was a mammoth task 💕

Stay tuned for more photos and videos of the night, which featured unforgettable readings by local authors.
