Got your coffee ready? Go ahead and read the post first, then come back for some more fun facts on covenants (has that ever been said?) 😅
An interesting side note on covenants, it was normally sealed by the shedding of the blood of an animal and set up God as a witness, pronouncing blessings if the covenant was kept and curses if the covenant was broken. The bloodshed was not to be taken lightly, it was a reminder that a life had to be lost for this covenant to be established! While there was normally no legal consequence, the belief in God carrying out the blessing or curse was more than enough to keep people faithful. It seems like it has become easier to break the vows that were sworn before God, and oaths for office, because our belief in God has diminished, yet the blessings and the curses still stand.
Even other cultures swore by their gods and cursed the oath breakers. As one Mesopotamian tablet warns, to “swear falsely” was to invite the god’s vengeance and lose royal protection. For the Hittites, the oath breaker would be punished, stripped of their thrones, have their cities demolished, and even be executed. They considered covenant-keeping the cornerstone of order!
Ok, the caption was a little heavy, that’s why I asked to read the post first 😬 Let me know what you think in the comments.
