Soon after Partition they set to work to consolidate the Indian Union.However the big thorn in their side was the Independent Sovereign State of Hyderabad Deccan which had been granted the right of self determination by the British.
When it became clear that the loyalties of the State were towards Pakistan a campaign of using force to disrupt and eventually invade the state were undertaken by Sardar Patel.
Resulting in the death of 200,000 Razakaars a volunteer army made up of the youths from the elite Muslim families who took up arms to defend their right to self determination. India commissioned an inquiry and the Sunderlal report documents the atrocities of the Indian forces upon the people of Deccan.
The Razakaar movement was banned and outlawed and the remaining workers killed or arrested.Their Leader Qasim Rizvi head of the Itihad ul muslameen the ruling political party was also arrested as he refused to concede the state while the Nizam bowed down to the Indians in a last ditch attempt to save his personal fortune.
However the case was already in the United Nations Security Council Who refused to accept the Nizami’s concession as it was made under duress.The expectation had been that Pakistan would Attack India if Deccan was Attacked. Qasim Rizvi had been working closely with Mhd A Jinnah Who fully supported and planned the resistance.India attacked Hyderabad Deccan the day after Jinnah died an untimely death due to state negligence.
It is speculated that Liaquat A Khan too was killed due to his support of Deccan case while the establishment and army were more focused on committing resources in Kashmir, Not realizing perhaps that from a legal standpoint the case was in favor of Deccan not Kashmir and if they had supported Deccan then even if they would have had to give up Deccan they could have negotiated Kashmir as settlement but as it stands both were lost.
It’s time India was held accountable for the atrocities it has tried to gloss over by a fabricated history and demonization of the Razakaars and Qasim Rizvi who spent 9 years in solitary confinement but fought his own case against a hostile military tribunal and in the end won all cases against him. He had been accused of atrocities against the Hindus but they were not able to prove a single charge against him.
My name is Atiya Khan,I am the granddaughter of Qasim Rizvi and I am contacted regularly by long suffering Muslims from India and Deccan and I can no longer turn a blind eye to their sacrifice and suffering and I invite my fellow Pakistani’s to support our brothers across forced borders.
