Paddle, Preach, and Pray… in the coastal Portuguese city of Porto, a unique spiritual community is, quite literally, making waves.
The Surf Church, led by Brazilian-born pastor and avid surfer Samuel Cianelli dos Anjos, blends traditional worship with surfing.
Every Sunday, people gather on the beach to surf together before walking to a nearby church to worship.
Their motto: “We love waves, and we love Jesus”. Their mission: to connect with young people through a shared love of the ocean.
For Pastor Sam, it’s a way for his parishioners, who are of all ages and come from around the world, to connect once again with their faith.
“If you walk around Porto, you see a lot of churches. If you search in Google, you see all the beautiful, gorgeous churches we have here, but they're empty. That's one of the problems with the old traditional religion. It lost the way how to communicate with people.”
In a country with deep historical and cultural ties to the Catholic Church, Portugal, like many other countries in Europe, has seen a steady decline in the number of young people engaging religion.
Many feel the Church no longer speaks to them in a way they understand and that’s precisely why the Surf Church movement was born a decade ago with Sam's belief you can easily connect with God on a board.
“My deepest moments with God are in the ocean when I'm looking for the next wave. It's when I look to the struggles I was surfing yesterday… when I paddle out, there’s nothing else that I want to do besides praising God.”
But he's also aware that some may be more interested in surfing than religion at first.
“We sell an experience and I even do that professionally as a surf teacher… but that will allow me to eventually have a deeper conversation with you.”
It’s an unconventional approach, that’s drawn both admiration and criticism.
Some argue that Surf Church prioritises surfing and socialising over worship and theological depth.
There are also concerns about the high turnover of members with some newcomers expecting a looser interpretation of the Gospel because of the Church’s casual style.
But Pastor Sam is clear: “The Gospel is the Gospel, and that will never change.”
