Don't compare your journey to anyone else's. You weren't meant to walk their path. You were meant to walk yours. Comparision is a thief. Focus on how you can keep improving. One step at a time.

A word to young photographers, especially those looking to get into sports - it's not easy. When I graduated college, I thought I'd get a photojournalism job, working for a newspaper and make a career out of it. When I started looking, there weren't very many jobs out there. And the ones that were, either weren't for me or I didn't get the job.

I started shooting as many high school games as I could and tried selling them through a website. Didn't get many sales, but I was having fun and learning. One day I shot a soccer game where the kickoff time moved up two hours and noticed the local newspaper's photographer wasn't there. It was a big playoff game between two teams in town, so the next day I called her and asked if they wanted any photos, which they did because they weren't notified of the time change.

The next school year I started working for the LS Journal more and more, taking photos and writing stories (at the same time). Eventually I'd get to work with the Kansas City Star from time to time. I'd also work a few games at the NAIA National Tournament, but also shooting a lot of games I wasn't getting paid to work just to get more experience (and also hang out with Matt Hicks and Brian Beard). They taught me a lot and even let me borrow some gear.

In the meantime, I was working jobs like being a janitor and youth intern at my church, then at The UPS Store, reffing soccer and then coaching soccer.

I didn't go into fulltime photography until 2021; it was a leap of faith. We just had a baby boy, and I didn't entirely know how it was all going to work. I had started doing real estate photography the year before (as COVID began). God provided as working with the Roos began quite suddenly with eight games in four days.

This industry can be really rewarding and really harsh all at the same time. Gigs have come by networking, cold emailing/calling and referrals. I've gotten to work some really cool events, and I've met some awesome people and great photographers. On the flip side, clients have come and gone for one reason or another. Some gigs I'd hoped for never materialized for me, and there are some really slow seasons.

This isn't to deter you. This isn't to tell you to find a different passion or job. It's to prepare you for the road ahead. It's not easy. You have to work hard. You have to be considerate of those around you. But it can be done. There are young photographers I know that are killing it. If you don't land a full-time job with a team, know that you might have to be creative with how you make money. Maybe it's a different type of photography/videography (or two or three). Maybe it's getting a part-time job doing something you're not as passionate about, but it makes ends meet. Create your own vision and don't just copy another's style.

My story

My photography business is a combination of things that I love: photography, sports, and the outdoors. Growing up, I played numerous sports, and that helped shape me into who I am today. I love playing them, watching them, and I even referee soccer. Photographing sports is sometimes just as fun as playing them. The emotion that comes with sports, especially in the biggest moments, is raw and unfiltered. I shoot sports for schools in national championships, newspapers like The Lee’s Summit Journal, The Kansas City Star and Dominion Post (Morgantown, W.Va.), and have worked with other photography companies shooting NAIA championships.

My parents instilled in me a love for nature growing up, and I want others to see the beauty of creation. We went to national parks like Yosemite, Olympic and Smokey Mountains as a kid. As an adult, I’ve gone to Colorado every year as I can’t get enough of the mountains. I have a long list of places I’d like to travel to photograph. There are so many cool details and grand vistas in the world that I hope people experience, and I hope my photography propels people to travel and discover for themselves.

I also volunteer my photography at my church, Abundant Life. My faith is a huge part of my life, and I want my photography, whether for the church, a ministry I travel with overseas, or anything else, to help tell God’s story.
