‘Will you know anyone going to Atomicon?’ The answer: yes and no…

It was such a pleasure to get to meet those I’ve only known virtually, in the actual flesh! Also listening to those I’ve long admired share their wisdom on stage. What a treat.

All hosted at the gorgeous The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Newcastle. Everything if so super inclusive and accessible, it honestly doesn’t matter if you come along not knowing anyone. You’ll instantly feel at home.

Andrew & Pete do a great job pre Atomicon of letting everyone get to know each other: There’s a Facebook group where you can ask questions and info is shared. Frequent email updates. An all singing and dancing app. There’s an excellent big online networking week, etc.

Edits - the free video creation/editing app from Instagram has just launched.

Here are the initial pros and cons so far…

PROS:

❤️ Loving the Ideas tab which has a great new feature - stickies (virtual post it notes) which you can use to write notes to yourself and they can be added to reels you save with reminders etc!

❤️ Projects tab - keeps drafts of reels even after posting. Great if you want to re-edit and repurpose

❤️ Great new range of fonts to add to videos created

❤️ Enhanced video editing in Timeline compared to the native Instagram reels editor

❤️ Inspiration tab - discover trending audio and reels (save and add stickies)

❤️ Saved reels from your Instagram are imported and found in the Ideas tab

❤️ Cutout AI feature is super handy to make more attention grabbing reels (I’ve used it on this reel - it exports the video of me and overlays)

❤️ It’s currently free (although I don’t see them charging)

❤️ You can export videos created directly into Instagram reels or save to camera roll without a watermark

CONS:

🤨 Green screen feature will be great but not currently working (sure it’s just a glitch)

🤨 No templates - why not? Missing a trick

🤨 No scheduling - although can export to Instagram and schedule from there

🤨 Can’t currently see that you can toggle between different accounts in Edits, like you can in Instagram

🤨 Work in progress - new features will be rolling out later this year, including new transition options and new movie AI generation tools

I think I’ll hold onto my InShot account for a while longer but will definitely be using Edits and am keen to see how useful it is as it develops further.

I’d love to know if you’ve tried it yet and what you think of it!

THREADS! 🧵 Everything you need to know…

🧵 Less than 24 after launching, the new Threads App has had over 30 million join

🧵 You’ll need an Instagram account to access Threads - it’s very easy to import your Bio and Following if you want to - or you can customise

🧵 Pitching itself as a friendly alternative to Twitter, it is for ‘sharing text updates and joining conversations… to enable positive, productive conversations’

🧵 Currently you can write up to 500 characters, add images, links, GIFs or videos up to 5 minutes

🧵 Currently no edit button, hashtags or native ability to add GIFs. Also unlikely to see the ability to DM

🧵 Feed is currently people you follow and recommendations

🧵 It’s easy to share your Threads to Instagram as a story or a post. You can even share it to Twitter!

🧵 Not currently available in the EU due to regulatory concerns

🧵 You currently can’t delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account, although you can deactivate it

🧵 New features likely to be rolled out soon. They know they’ve got work to do but were likely keen to strike whilst the blue bird app is in meltdown mode

So should you join the frenzy?! I’d advise to think carefully where your target audience are likely to be found. If it’s not currently on Twitter then it’s unlikely to be on Threads.

Also think about your resources too. It’s far better to do one or a few social media platforms well than burnout by spreading yourself too thin.

I’ll report back once Threads has been around a bit longer and give you my updated thoughts.

So is it worth getting Meta Verified (a blue tick) on Instagram?!

PROS:

➡️ BUILDS TRUST - the verified badge shows users that you’re a real person

➡️ ACCOUNT SECURITY - your account should be better protected as less chance of impersonation with proactive identity monitoring

➡️ SUPPORT AVAILABLE - answers from a real person if you have issues (tbc!!)

CONS:

➡️ COST - it’ll cost you £11.99 per month

➡️ EXCLUDES BUSINESS ACCOUNTS - currently business accounts aren’t eligible (although it appears some business accounts with faces in profile pic and first & last name in user field have been offered verification)

➡️ LOSS OF PRIVACY - you have to display your first and surname (to match govt docs) in your account name

➡️ SHARING PERSONAL INFO - to get verified you have to provide Meta with a photo of a government issued document, eg. passport or driving licence, which not everyone will be comfortable doing

➡️ FIXED USER NAME - you can’t change your user name once verified (you’d have to cancel your subscription and go through verification process again if you wanted to change it)

It takes up to 48 hours from applying to get verified (mine took full 48 hours).

There’s a wider debate to be had about whether or not we should have to pay for these benefits when Meta already harvests and monetises our data, but for me it was worth getting verified as Instagram is literally my business!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether or not verification is worth it…
