🌿Did you know waterfalls in Iceland are called 'foss'? It's a nod to Icelandic history and language. 'Foss' comes from Old Norse, simply meaning waterfall. Iceland is home to numerous waterfalls, with estimates ranging from thousands to tens of thousands, depending on the criteria used for classification. I spent two weeks touring Iceland in a campervan, and I lost count of the number of 'foss' we encountered by day one! 🚐

🔥The lijen volcano complex is a group of volcanoes located on the eastern end of Java Indonesia. In 2015 I was lucky enough to hike around this area. I was completely overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the landscape, but what truly shocked me was learning about how they mine sulphur here. 🪨 🌋

Sulphur mining often takes place in volcanic regions where sulphur deposits can be found near volcanic vents. The most common method used in Indonesia is traditional manual mining, where miners extract sulphur manually using basic tools such as picks and shovels.

These miners descend into the crater of the volcano and break off chunks of solid sulphur, which have formed due to the sulfuric gases emitted by the volcano. Once collected, the sulphur is loaded onto baskets or sacks and carried out of the crater, often involving a strenuous journey up steep and rugged terrain.

This traditional method can be labor-intensive and hazardous due to the toxic gases and unstable conditions in volcanic areas. However, it has been practiced for centuries and continues to be a significant source of sulphur for industrial use in Indonesia.

Manual extraction in the Sulphur Mines of Java is a testament to human resilience and the enduring connection between people and nature. Feeling humbled by the experience.
