A meeting took place on Wednesday, October 9th last in the Wheel Inn, Ballyouskill to discuss the purchase of a defibrillator for the area. HELP THE TRADERS TO LIGHT UP THE TOWN

The public is being urged to help Portlaoise's Traders this week to ensure that the town's streets have a festive atmosphere again this year. Downtown Portlaoise are a small group of businesses who take on the major task of paying for and organising the Christmas lights. In total the lights cost €14,700. This includes electricity. Downtown Portlaoise has to pay for meters all year round and the electricity used at Christmas. An Electrician must also be paid to help put up and take down the lights, as well as the fitting of new installations. Insurance cover is needed in case anything goes wrong, bulbs and installations must also be replaced as they break. We would like to appeal to the people of Portlaoise to give what they can towards the lights, as they benefit everybody in the community, The flag day is Friday October 18th, so please give what you can.

STATE SPENT €1.4MILLION ON EMPTY OFFICES

The Minister for Public Expenditure is failing to control wasteful spending by State agencies after it was revealed Forfás spent €1,407,655M on vacant office space in 2012. The 2012 Financial Statements from Forfás raises serious questions for Minister Howlin and OPW which comes under his control. It is clear taxpayer's money is being wasted on empty office space in Dublin. We need to see real joined-up thinking across Government to tackle this type of problem. At a time when over 415,000people are still on the Liver Register it is simply not good enough for a State Agency to be wasting almost €1.5M on empty offices. "Minister Howlin needs to ensure there is an audit of how much such vacant office space there is across State Agencies and how much money the taxpayer is being forced to pay out as a result"

Seán Fleming, FF Spokesperson on Public Expenditure & Reform.

SUPER SIZED CLASSES IN LAOIS

More than a quarter of Laois' 10,177 primary school children are in 'supersized classes' of over thirty pupils, the third worst in Leinster. The Dept of Education figures place Laois joint third, after Dublin and Wicklow. 13 out of 14 children are in classes larger than the EU average of 20 pupils per teacher. One class had 38 pupils last year says Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, who has called on the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn to leave education untouched in the Budget 2014.
