Trump Blocks Ukraine’s NATO Path Ahead of Zelenskyy Talks
President Donald Trump has declared there will be “no going into NATO by Ukraine,” sending a strong message just before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s White House visit. Trump also stated that Kyiv should abandon its hopes of regaining Crimea, instead urging a peace deal with Russia that excludes NATO membership.
The comments mark a dramatic shift from longstanding U.S. policy, which has supported Ukraine’s eventual NATO accession. Critics argue Trump’s stance aligns with Moscow’s demands, while supporters say it could pave the way for direct negotiations to end the war.
Zelenskyy is expected to press the U.S. administration for stronger guarantees of security and continued military aid, even as Trump signals a more transactional approach to U.S. foreign policy. European allies are closely watching the talks, concerned that a peace settlement brokered on these terms could undermine Ukrainian sovereignty and embolden Russian aggression.
