Brian Wilson. I knew Brian for quite a long time, as this photo illustrates. Following are a few memories of Brian that are running through my mind as I consider this loss:
A favorite songwriting moment for me was when Brian telephoned and asked me to co-write a Christmas song with him. He knows I don’t cowrite, so it was an interesting request. The result was, “Christmasy” for his 2005 What I Really Want for Christmas album. It’s a pretty good song.
Brian and I drove together to Rosemary Clooney’s funeral in Beverly Hills. It was my delight to be his driver and comforter that sad day, as she was one of his idols from that era. Brian was shaken by the unfamiliar Latin mass and the finality of the huge crashing iron bells. Suddenly I found myself sitting alone. I left the church to find him and caught him about halfway down the block. We didn’t return to mass and instead we drove up Benedict Canyon to the Coyote Cafe for lunch.
It was a great honor when we were out one day and he turned to a third party and said, “This is Jimmy Webb, he’s my friend.”
I eagerly participated in the tribute to Brian at Radio City Music Hall. Vince Gill, David Crosby and I were tasked with a live performance of “Surf’s Up”. It’s not the easiest song to perform but it was a wonderful opportunity to explore Brian’s melodic and harmonic sensibilities. The surreal lyric, by the way, was contributed by Van D**e Parks.
Years back, I gave him an ocarina, an instrument that dates back 12,000 years. Brian accepted it with a childish delight. We played it together.
It is difficult to find the right words to express my astonishment at his polyphonic contrapuntal composition let alone the sweet high falsetto, so perfectly controlled. I was simply stunned by his musical talents.
My deepest condolences to the family, particularly his children. My heart also reaches out to friends Van D**e Parks, Gerry Beckley and David Leaf who were so close to him.
