🇦🇷 THE END OF THE NO. 10
For 21 years, Argentina knew who to look for.
Lionel Messi.
But his story with Argentina was never easy.
They questioned him.
They doubted him.
They asked why the player who seemed almost unstoppable at Barcelona couldn’t give them the same magic in an Argentina shirt.
He even walked away once.
Then everything changed.
Copa América.
Another Copa América.
The World Cup.
And somewhere along the way, the same people who once questioned Messi began to realise just how lucky they were to watch him.
Last night, at a packed Monumental, Messi played his final game for Argentina.
39 years old.
One goal.
Two assists.
Argentina 3–0 Benin.
And then came the tears.
Messi leaves with 208 caps, 126 goals and 70 assists.
But honestly, those numbers don't tell the whole story.
Messi didn't just win Argentina's love.
He had to earn it.
That's what makes his story so beautiful.
Maradona was loved almost instantly.
Messi's relationship with Argentina took years.
It was complicated.
It was painful.
It was beautiful.
A love that had to be built.
And now comes the strange part.
The shirt remains.
The No. 10 remains.
The expectations remain.
But Messi doesn't.
Argentina will find another great player.
Maybe another superstar.
Maybe another World Cup winner.
But they won't find another Messi.
The next No. 10 doesn't need to become Messi.
They just need to become themselves.
Because for 21 years, Argentina always knew who to look for.
Now they have to learn where to look next.
