Many of our readers may have seen reference to “MormonLeaks” in the news recently, involving the publication of internal documents and videos of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City, UT. We want to make clear that Ryan McKnight, Scott Faust, and their “MormonLeaks team" behind this effort are in no way affiliated with us, nor do we bear any responsibility for the leaking of confidential information belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
We are an academic research team focused on reconstructing the historical narrative of how the Mormon scriptures were created. This history has been deliberately erased and altered over a period of more than 150 years, and we chose the name in 2010 because we felt 'MormonLeaks' adequately described the first-time general availability of the narrative that produced the Mormon scriptures.
Given our focus on Early Mormonism, we are generally interested in historical evidence from the 19th century and modern-day computing methods, so that we can recreate the narrative by analyzing relevant texts of that time, and then match the available evidence with the authors of passages of Mormon scripture. The recent leaks of videos and documents mostly involve modern-day business dealings of no concern to our interests.
There has been substantial confusion in the media because ‘MormonLeaks’ now describes two completely different efforts run by different teams with different objectives. We are still investigating the best possible response to this conflation of our research with the posting of private and internal documents belonging to the LDS Church. We will keep you posted and update media outlets on how we will go about this disentanglement.
Any suggestions are welcome….
