Our first visit to Big Nicks BBQ in Murphy, North Carolina, turned into one of those delicious travel discoveries that makes a road trip across America so memorable.

When you are exploring Western North Carolina, there is something special about stepping away from the expected itinerary and finding a local spot that becomes part of the story. Big Nicks BBQ gave us the chance to slow down, sit back, and experience a little more of the flavor of Murphy.

Yesterday, we shared the beginning of our visit to the Hayesville Historical and Arts Museum. Today, we are continuing the story with our second collection of photos from this memorable stop in Western North Carolina.

While exploring Hayesville, North Carolina, we stepped inside the Clay County Historical and Arts Council Old Jail Museum, a remarkable piece of local history housed inside a building constructed in 1912. Once a working county jail, the building now preserves stories, artifacts, art, and memories from generations of life in the Carolina mountains.

Walking through those old spaces felt like stepping through a doorway into another era. The original jail cells remain, while exhibits reveal pieces of Cherokee heritage, pioneer life, rural traditions, and the people who helped shape Clay County.

This is the side of travel we love most. The unexpected discoveries. The historic buildings. The small mountain towns. The stories hiding in plain sight.

Sometimes the most beautiful part of traveling is not the destination itself. It is discovering the stories hidden within it. Our time exploring Cherokee, North Carolina gave us another opportunity to see travel through a different lens. The images and artwork connected to the Cherokee Nation offered a glimpse into a culture with generations of history, creativity, tradition, and storytelling. Looking at the artwork made us pause and appreciate how much can be communicated through color, imagery, craftsmanship, and artistic expression.

Cherokee is already an extraordinary destination because of its location in the mountains of western North Carolina and its proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains. But experiencing the cultural side of the area adds another dimension to the journey. This is something we have come to appreciate about traveling across the United States.

There are the spectacular resorts, luxury hotels, incredible restaurants, theme parks, famous attractions, and beautiful landscapes that make a trip exciting. Then there are the places that invite you to slow down and understand something about the people and history connected to where you are visiting. For us, those experiences are just as important.

Sometimes the grandest adventure is twenty minutes from your front door. We rolled into Murphy, North Carolina for a car show and found a whole universe humming near the historic courthouse.

Polished chrome. Old engines. Stories traded between strangers who become friends before the sun goes down. The air smelled like popcorn and gasoline and possibility. We walked the rows of classic cars, each one a time machine with a steering wheel.

Then we followed our hunger to a local bite, a small counter with big flavor, the kind of meal that tastes like a memory you have not made yet. This is the Lost Girl in Tomorrowland way. We do not wait for a passport stamp to feel alive. We find the magic in our own backyard.

We took these two photographs in the same place, outside the Atlanta Braves stadium at The Battery Atlanta, but they were captured twelve months apart.

At first glance, it is simply a comparison of two moments. Look a little longer, though, and it becomes something more personal.

Travel has a fascinating way of turning places into chapters of our lives. We remember where we were, what we were doing, what we were looking forward to, and sometimes even the feeling of standing there.

Then we return.
