Back in December 2024, Caleb & Chris got a chance to interview two tech entrepreneurs and learn about their really cool app, FoodScout! Now roughly a half year later, Caleb & Chris sit down with one of those two guys again, Damion Dehart, and hear a ruthlessly transparent update on their startup journey.

The conversation highlights the challenges of pivoting a business, detailing the failure of their initial app due to high marketing costs and customer churn. Damion also discusses the abandonment of a second venture, a skill-based wagering app, one week before its launch, primarily due to a lack of capital. The episode then shifts to a discussion on their current endeavor, FoodScout Go!, a white-label online ordering system for restaurants.

If you want to hear what pivoting a startup is REALLY like, be sure to check out this episode (and also Episode 36 for some context)! A SINCERE thanks to Damion for his authenticity, honesty, and willingness to share how painful (but necessary) a pivot can be!

Special thanks to Indicium for editing this episode!

In this week’s episode, Caleb and Chris discuss a variety of topics, beginning with their recent two-week break from recording and Chris’ trip to catch a FIFA Club World Cup match, followed by the controversial role of frappes as a “gateway drug” to specialty coffee.

The main focus then shifts to a refresher of Chris’ frustration with previous mainstream podcast players and how they were either acquired or shut down, disrupting the user community and data. This frustration motivated Chris to develop his own podcast player web app, Alli, utilizing AI to build a platform that empowers users with listening analytics and community features, setting it apart from music-centric streaming services.

Needless to say, the guys REALLY want to know what you think about this project so please check it out at https://Alli.Media and give them some feedback! And hey, you can even listen to this very episode directly on Alli itself!

Special thanks to Chris for letting Zac take a break by editing this episode!

The betting website Kalshi spent less than $2,000 (not $200,000) for the following commercial that aired during the recent NBA Finals. But the massive financial savings is not the only remarkable part. NONE of this commercial actually included any real humans. The entire commercial was generated by prompts using Google's Veo3 video tool:

Kalshi hired me to make the most unhinged NBA Finals commercial possible.Network TV actually approved this GTA-style madness to be shown during the game. 🤣H...

The week the guys talk about the 2016 movie, The Founder, a period drama that tells the story of Ray Kroc, a salesman who turned two brothers’ innovative fast-food burger joint (McDonald’s) into the biggest restaurant in the world.

Caleb and Chris reflect on Kroc’s ambition, persistence, and ruthlessness, and how any of these talents (when taken to their extreme) can do as much harm as good. The guys also take some time to reflect on entrepreneurship more broadly, including the challenges of starting a business, and the personal sacrifices involved, using Kroc’s story as a point of comparison.

The conversation touches on balancing ambition with personal life, the importance of persistence, and the realities of the business world compared to idealized social media portrayals.

Check out the guys’ chat about this movie on the podcast platform of your choice.

The Sippi Podcast is back with Season Four! The hosts, Caleb & Chris, return after a six-week break and discuss their time off, with Caleb providing an update on his dissertation and coffee business. They also discuss the current state of podcasting, noting high failure rates and the rise of celebrity-hosted shows. A significant portion of the episode focuses on the increasing impact of artificial intelligence, particularly new AI tools for conversational interaction* (see the duck quack footnote below) and coding, and the hosts ponder the ethical considerations and rapid advancements in the field. Finally, they introduce tariffs as a future topic for discussion due to perceived misinformation and their real-world effects on businesses like Caleb’s coffee shop.

*And yes, duck quacks were inserted into the episode because one of the AI bots decided to overshare information about Chris’ personal life. Fortunately for him, it’s not a video podcast or you would have seen how much he was blushing when this unexpected event occurred!

The guys temporarily come out of their six-week break to discuss an EXTREMELY bizarre event that happened recently on April Fool’s Day. In this episode, the guys talk about “War Thunder”, a video game known for its addictive “taps and sinks” economy, which haphazardly lead to the game developer’s controversial April Fool’s joke that involved a TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLAR in-game purchase.

This week the guys reflect on their first year and 50 episodes of the Sippi Podcast! Which is a little ironic, considering the rookie technical mistakes they made just trying to get this particular episode recorded.

In celebration of one year, the guys decide to relax and wonder off on numerous side topics, including a recount of the humorous origin story behind Caleb’s drink, the “Cafe Slider,” which involved a run-in with Coca-Cola.

Looking ahead, they announce a six-week break to prepare for their next goal, Season Four of the Sippi Podcast, which intends to add an additional 50 published episodes to the catalog! The guys take a moment to earnestly solicit listener feedback on future topics and the show’s general direction, including potentially incorporating more casual discussions alongside their entrepreneurial content. They also share anecdotes about listener engagement and their own evolving perspectives on the podcast’s format and audience.
