Pioneers Graduating

Bena SDA School in Bena District, EHP held its first grade 10 graduation yesterday. A total of 42 students graduated.

The institution was first known as Bena SDA Primary School before it was given a high school. Since both the primary and high school share facilities, they chose to use the name, ‘Bena SDA School.’

The High school was granted level 7 which means they are eligible to have grades 10 to 12. However, there is only grades 9 and 10. The high school alone has a total of 142 students.

The current principal of Bena SDA High School, Baundo Nicholson, said during the graduation that Bena SDA school had already been practicing benchmarking before it was given a high school. Academic Benchmarks help teachers identify students' strengths and weaknesses and also help students to work harder to reach their requirements for each grade level. She also stated that they are training students mentally, socially, physically, and spiritually based on the Bible, and she believes that all the graduates have built good characters during their studies there.

Julius Cornelius, the current Principal of Kuso Primary and former principal of Bena SDA Primary, said it took only 1 year for the institution to be elevated into a Junior high school.
It was in 2021, during the 4th board meeting of Bena SDA primary school, when they submitted the agenda for Bena SDA primary to be elevated into a Junior High school. He said the board members at the time were Mr. Cornelius, Mr. Waha, Mr. Hosapa, Elder Samson, the Late Robin Susuke, and the community reps. Finally, with the help of the current Education Director, Lincoln Kasa and Unggai Bena District Inspector Kanaku Stephen, the primary school was given the high school status.

The Principal also asked the public to help support the school’s infrastructural developments.

“You want action, then you must also take action." Said MP Kinoka Feo

The Bagahinupa Community Development Association in Bena, EHP, launched their association in the presence of MP Kinoka Feo yesterday. Updates were also given regarding the work done within Bagahinupa and surrounding communities by the speakers during the event.

MP Kinoka Feo congratulated and commended the people of Bagahinupa for their commitment in the Unggai Bena Beautification Empowerment Project. He also said that people must work in order to get what they want.

He approved and gave a K250, 000 cheque based on the request and water supply design made by engineer, Epa Mark Ihinia and the community. Then added another K2 million for water supply.
Ihinia and his team, who have been searching for clean, flowing water in Bena, have found it in Bagahinupa. He said the flow rate will reach Korofeigu and Lahame, and the project will take up to 5 years.

MP Kinoka Feo said that the UBBE’s main purpose is to give a sense of direction or purpose to the community because communities no longer work together. He used South Korea’s New Village Movement as an example to explain the importance of people working together to achieve a common goal or purpose. That movement that happened in the past in South Korea was a group of normal people coming and working together to achieve one goal. That movement changed them from poverty to a power nation, which they are today.

He also said that the road from Lahame to Bagahinupa and Korofeigu will be an asphalt concrete road, which costs almost K30 million. He explained that the roadbuilding process will take several steps, which include concrete at the base of the road and 50 mm of coal tar on top. The road will be officially opened next year, either in March or April, depending on the progress of the construction.

"𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆," says Administration

The Seventh Day Adventist Students in Rintebe Lutheran Secondary School in Unggai Bena District, EHP, were told not to worship and to work on Saturdays. The principal and the Chaplin of the school informed and restricted Rintebe SDA students from worshipping either within or outside the school premises on Saturday.

Rintebe Adventist Student Association (RASA) President Piuna Kati, with their treasurer, Joram Piuna, were given a memo by the school’s Chaplain Jogoh Stanley on the 4th of March this year. It was signed by the Chaplain and Principal Pauline Base after verbally confronted the SDA students. The memo stated that Rintebe is a Lutheran institution. Thus, students should abide by the guidelines and policies of the institution. One of the outlined policies is, ‘No other denomination should conduct devotions, meetings; formal or informal, gatherings, etc. in the school.’ Either teachers or students. The administration wants to make sure that the Lutheran church policies are effectively followed and maintained. Apart from that memo, the administration said to the students that the surrounding community is not safe and that girls can easily be r***d by the local drug bodies if allowed to leave school on Saturdays to worship.

The RASA president responded, via letter, asking politely if RASA can work/ do chores other days and rest on Saturday in respect to their own religion. However, the administration stood firm on their policies and still wants all students to work and stop other devotions, meetings, or gatherings on Saturdays.

Both the RASA President and Treasurer said they have already confronted the administration four times on different occasions, asking the administration to reconsider and accept their request. But the administration did not. They will be visiting the administration for the last time this Friday to ask if the administration will reconsider.
