Get the "Celebration!" pattern FREE in the June/July/August 2025 issue! Here are a few ways in which you can customize this pattern:
✔️Make the fireworks glitter with metallic yarns or Arctic Rays.
✔️Use brightly colored wools or yarns to give the fireworks emphasis.
✔️Practice your points with the stars or replace the stars with
French knots.
✔️Add velvet yarns or paisley to the red, white, and blue.
✔️Follow a direction of hooking that makes the stripes of
the flag “wave”; mix textures and dyed wools to add to the
wave of the flag.

💬"Painting parties have been quite the rage for some time now. Perhaps you have attended one. Everyone gets a generous glass of wine, and the fun begins. The instructor provides a painting project that is doable even for the budding artist who has never held a paintbrush. Step by step, the instructor walks the students through the painting. By the end of the session—once the wine glasses are empty—each person has a lovely painting to show for their time. Well, why shouldn’t rug hookers get in on the fun of a painting
party by combining hooking or punching with painting a canvas?"

💬"I bet you can remember picking up a hook for the first time and making your first-ever effort to pull a loop of wool through backing fabric. Almost by definition, beginnings are humble. Here, about a dozen rug hookers think back to their first little mats—those stars, snowmen, and other simple shapes and figures. From their beginnings, these members of Midwest Rug Hookers have taken their favorite fiber art in many directions and allowed art a big place in their lives. These are their stories."

This month on Third Thursdays with Lisanne, we're exploring the second part of the rich history and creative possibilities of paisley-patterned woven wool—specifically, vintage paisley shawls that once served as cherished status symbols in Scotland, France, and Britain. Lisanne walks you through how to evaluate these beautiful textiles, decide which are “cutters” (suitable for rug hooking), and prep the fabric for use in your projects. You'll learn how to preserve the integrity of the design while incorporating the elegance of paisley into your hooked rugs. A must-watch for anyone interested in mixing history, texture, and tradition!
