Dustin, has quickly ascended to becoming one of the best mountain runners in the nation within the last few years, taking 🥈 in a tight race to Jackson Cole this year at Cirque Series ™ Crystal & 🥉 at Rut Mountain Runs 28K. Dustin is also the reigning North Bend Trailfest 30K champion, back to defend his title this year.

So stoked to welcome Casey Campbell to the show for a pre North Bend Trailfest & Défi des Couleurs chat, ahead of big back to back weeks of racing.

After taking 6th Ascent & 11th at the 23K at the The Broken Arrow Skyrace back in June, Casey showed the world that he is truly one of the best uphill runners in the states. With that, Casey recently represented team USA in Poland at the Rollercoaster 21K where he took 8th and he will once again represent the Stars and Stripes at Défi des Couleurs next week in the vertical race.

Such an honor and a privilege to finally welcome Hillary Allen to the show !

Originally supposed to be a pre- North Bend Trail Fest interview, I couldn’t help but turn it into an hour episode, jam packed with all kinds of fun topics that Hillary was kind enough to unpack.

We talked a lot about Hillary’s 2026 season, fighting back from injury and recent performances in numerous vertical races across the U.S. We spoke a lot on career, longevity, writing her book, “Out & Back”, cycling & a lot about 2025 Worlds in Can Franc - where Hillary raced both the Vertical & Long Trail (80K) courses and had strong performances in both.

Sooooo stoked to welcome Matt Zupan to the show for episode 201 !

Matt who now resides in Truckee, has become a legend of the Sierra both in the ultra, trail & mountain running scene over the last few years. Matt still holds a STOUT unsupported record on the Norman’s 13 line set back in 2021. He has ascended in the trail scene in the last few years, most recently taking 🥈 at the Leadville 100 in 2026 and the dub 🥇 at Mountain Tiger Donner Summit in 2025. In the last 24 months, Matt’s also been on the podium of the Big Alta 100K and won the Silverstate half & Tahoe Trail 50K.

Chrissy Lofgren is your 2026 Pikes Peak Marathon Champion ! Taking a commanding lead after Barr Camp, Chrissy won by over 27 minutes.

This was Chrissy’s 4th crack at the race, beginning in 2023 where she took 9th, and just progressed and progressed from there on. Taking 🥉 in 2025 leading to the win this year. Chrissy has had the guidance of coach - Rachel Spaulding to prepare her for her mountain running season.

Chrissy has had an amazing 2026 season. She won the Up & Over 10K, took 🥈 at the Telluride Mountain Run 14 Mile, 4th at Cirque Series ™ Snowbird and 9th in an insanely competitive Black Canyon Ultras 50K.

Darren Thomas (Darren Thomas) is your 2026 Pikes Peak Marathon champion ! Stoked to welcome Darren back to the show for his second appearance.

What a special performance from Darren. The definition of grit, determination and not giving up, winning on his 10th try on the big hill. He’s come close before - taking 🥈 in 2017 to remi_bonnet and 🥉in 2018, where Darren led the race to the summit and was ultimately overtaken by Dakota Jones in route to setting the downhill record and winning the race. Days like that led to Sunday’s performance by preparing Darren to save some for back half of the course.

Aside from Pikes, Darren and I caught up on all things life, racing, Reno, return from injury and more.

Every now and then I like to cover an ultra event that I feel truely captures what makes a particular zone so special. So when friend of the pod aims - RD & founder of the The Running Kind reached out to chat about the new Catskill 100, I was immediately stoked to hear more about this proper adventure of a race.

100 miles - almost 29,000 ft of vertical gain, traversing some of the most pristine wilderness in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate, New York. A good chunk of the race is on the famous “Devils Path”.

Registration is already opened - Aimee’s goal is to have a 50/50 gender skew ! Taking place August 6th, 2027. Signups are in the show notes on Spotify, Apple, YouTube and of course on the The Running Kind website via Movemint.

I am both speechless and so inspired by all the amazing performances that took place in our sport this weekend ! Honestly there’s too many to count, but here’s a few that stood out to me.

🏔️ Joseph Gray took his 6th dub at the Pikes Peak Ascent on Saturday, continuing to etch his name in history on this mountain. Joseph joins a small fraternity of humans with 6 or more wins on the mountain.

🏔️ Cam Smith was just 7 seconds back from Joe, in what I feel like has to be one of the most clutch performances I’ve ever seen, and has to be one of the fastest closing times above 14K in the races history.

Lots of firsts ! Anna Gibson absolutely smoked the ascent with her first win. I hope she continues to come back to chase Kim Dobson’s record. There aren’t too many humans walking around that can do that and Anna is for sure one of them. Chrissy Lofgren & Darren Thomas both get their first Marathon wins. Chrissy led from wire to wire, while Darren was locked in battle with Kieran Nay - who also gave it his everything on the day and held the lead for almost 75% of the race if not more. Amazing seeing two childhood friends from Colorado Springs who have grown into such incredible athletes, doing battle for the win. Also congrats to Dean Abel on breaking through after years of hard work to get himself on the marathon podium.

Shout out to Rick Webb for destroying the double (ascent & marathon) - it’s been fun to watch Rick continue to work hard and improve this summer.

Maya Rayle made us all proud in her European debut, taking 🥈 at the Maraton Trzech Jezior 21K WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING ASSOCIATION final ! Maya will also compete at Défi des Couleurs in just a few weeks to represent team USA again this summer. Maya is the 2026 USATF Mountain Running Champion.

Jackson Cole absolutely smashed Cirque Series ™ Crystal Mountain on Saturday in the Cascades lowering the course record down to 1:01 on a stout course.

Jane Maus takes down the woman’s Unsupported FKT on Longs Peak, running a stout 2:39 ! Jane is now the women’s record holder on both the Grand Teton and Longs 🫡

Stoked on episode 197, to finally welcome Will J to the show !

Will will be competing tomorrow at the Pikes Peak Marathon - so I couldn’t think of a better time to have him on the show to help tell his story.

We dove deep into Will’s season, his profession as a teacher, some of our views on AI, balance in life, mixing it up between the short and long stuff, - and we get some college stories from Western Colorado - where Will ran with some names you would recognize today in the trail running scene.

We also dive into Will’s youth - where he connected with trail running at young age, where Will’s dad started the Beast of Big Creek Skyrace race that we all know and love today.
