In 2022, the Department of Agriculture announced its plans to ban certain HHPs by 1 June 2024. However, the most dangerous of these pesticides have still not been banned and are still widely used on commercial farms, causing respiratory problems, skin irritations, genetic mutations, cancer, damage t...

We messed up and I’m sorry. Watching Don’t Look Up when it was released in 2021 I focused on the satire, the wit, and dark humour. The warnings were there, and writer, director, and producer of Don’t Look Up, Adam McKay, was spot on.

Re-watching it, in the light of the Californian blazes and the inauguration of a climate-ignorant US president for the second time (I cannot mention his name for fear that the algorithm will find me and shove more orange monster ‘news’ down my throat) I feel a chill.

“You knew, we told you what would happen!” yells the scientist played by Leonardo di Caprio. Scientists around the world are saying the same thing as the climate crisis gets a grip on the planet, wholly unprepared for the devastation of successive droughts, heatwaves, fires, and wars.

When I was 10 I learnt about cruelty to animals. I went to a bullfight when we were living in Spain. We were invited by some American expats who had taken their children to see a ‘baby bullfight’ and thought we’d enjoy it.

I thought there would be ‘pretend’ fighting. But there was nothing pretend about the torture of the young bull, weeded out for the bull ring. I couldn’t watch as the trainee bullfighters pranced around, their pointy spears held above their heads, ready to stab into the animal’s neck.

When I was a child we lived in Spain. I was about 10 years old. We weren’t there for very long and we lived in a villa on a beach that had lots of steps down to the sand. A friend gave us a puppy, one of several that had been thrown into the sea in a bag, to drown. Our puppy was the only survivor in the sack of discarded puppies. She looked like a little bear and she had a deep fear of the sea and would panic when I tried to get her to play on the beach with me. Thalassophobia?
