Mixmag Australia/NZ Electronic music, video and club culture editorial from down under

22/12/2025

What makes a ‘track’? In a music landscape increasingly catered to streams and replayability, the idea of a single song reaching the heights of popularity is, in many ways, even less tied to its artistic merit.

In dance and electronic music culture, this popularity has many factors that don’t apply to other genres. How long it’s been ‘teased’ by producers, its interpretation or reinterpretation of current musical movements, and so much more come into how artists and fans alike perceive their attachment to individual tracks.

For artists across Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand, their distance from the rest of the world has generally left them incredibly open to sounds thousands of kilometres away, and even more supportive of ones in their own backyard.

In the final instalment of our 2025 retrospective, Mixmag ANZ is contributing to the all-important ‘end of year list’ ecosystem, with words from the likes of , , , , , & many, many more.

2025 was, in many ways, the year the DJ mix reached its peak. The success and downfall of dance music broadcasts the world over, the increased attention on different cultural movements and the availability of resources to record and distribute those mixes have all contributed to a year where even albums started to become more like mixes.

But what makes a lasting impression? A big crowd reaction, crazy stage design in the background of a video, or just incredible selections that bypass all of the hype? It all depends on who you ask. So, we did exactly that.

With that in mind, Mixmag ANZ has chosen to contribute to the all-important ‘end of year list’ ecosystem, but with two small changes.

Firstly, these are the favourite mixes of local artists. The people they loved, who they think are worth spotlighting, and who got them through a year plagued with so much to learn from and try to rise above, spoken about in their own voice.

Secondly, this list and those to follow have no order. We’re here to celebrate it all, without rank.

Here are some of 2025’s best global releases, including contributions by , , , .aus, , .jackcolquhoun & many many more.

In the wake of the worst mass shooting on Australian shores in 30 years, we understand that many events have chosen not to go ahead this weekend, whether on Gadigal Land/Sydney or not.

In bringing together this week’s weekly guide, we have included all events that were, at the time of writing, still listed on our website or viewable elsewhere online.

If you see an event here that you know is no longer going ahead, please feel free to let us know in the comments to inform others.

Antisemitism, violence, & hate in all its forms have no place in our world, in our communities or on our dance floors.

In an increasingly globalised world, the influence of electronic music became more evident than ever before in 2025. Some of the year’s biggest albums saw the world’s biggest popstars, rappers and beyond take huge inspiration from dance’s many sounds, for better or for worse.
So too did the world’s music culture become smaller where it counts.

With each year, promotion for New Year’s plans creeps earlier as the summer seems to get longer. Who is playing as the clock strikes midnight, where you are, and the people you’re with, is a moment that, for better or for worse, can define the year for many people.

But how does that kind of pressure feel for the artists on stage?

To get an idea of what kinds of feelings this New Year’s holds, we caught up with a selection of the standout local talent to appear at the inaugural , including , , , & .
