Tips when applying for a Visa to attend conferences/event abroad.
Attending conferences, academic events, business meetings and highly publicized events requires that you get it right from the beginning to avoid rejection when you put in your application.
I have attended more than 35 conferences in 19 countries of the world and here are some useful tips:
1. The calibre of the conference matters: not all conferences, or events advertised abroad carry weight. Some are predatory and unserious with pricey registration fees and attractions but very light weight in value. Immigration always know these types of conferences and applying for them automatically means you have a very high chance of denial from the start.
A pro-tip here is to ensure that the convener of the conference is a reputable one with well known credentials. This can be a university, a reputable organization with known business and the conference body has a track record that is verifiable online. Be mindful, that they have a website doesn't mean it is reputable, you need to do your due diligence before you part with your money.
2. Letter of invitation/acceptance and support letter: Always ask the conference convener to give you a letter of formal letter of invitation/acceptance of your registration. The letter is key to your visa application. Also, if you are coming from Africa, ask for a letter of support for your visa application. This will serve as the cover letter to the Embassy.
3. Attend to speak or deliver a paper: You have a higher chance of visa approval if you are attending a conference as a speaker, presenter or facilitator. Participation alone may not cut it.
4. Additional letter of support from your university or organization: This is the icing on the cake. If you are a student, get a letter of support and enrolment confirmation from your school. If you are working, ask your organization for a support letter or sponsorship/leave letter. It is better if you are attending at an official capacity. You need this.
5. Pay your conference fees and always submit the evidence.
6. If you have a paper or a poster presentation, add it to your application package.
7. If you have a business or you are an independent attendee, show demonstrable evidence of home ties and how attending the conference ties to what you are doing. Safe bet, get a letter from your former lecturer to back up your application.
There are several conferences in the world today happening every year and this will always remain a solid way to get your travel history to a Top A country.
Follow who know road.
