🇺🇸 Radio World – February 1, 2025 Issue.

The latest issue of Radio World brings a wealth of information about the radio broadcasting industry, touching on technological advancements, power infrastructure challenges, and the evolving role of women in engineering. Here's a breakdown of the key topics:

1️⃣ Broadcast Technology Innovations
The magazine features cutting-edge developments in radio studio design and automation, with companies like Wheatstone offering advanced AoIP (Audio over IP) solutions. Notably, their Audioarts DMX console system now integrates with WheatNet IP, making it ideal for smaller or backup studios.

Other highlights include:
✅ The importance of smart AoIP routing for streamlined workflows.
✅ The role of metadata management, as Alan Jurison joins Quu Inc. to improve radio display information.
✅ Kintronic Labs' innovations in AM technology, reinforcing its legacy in RF hardware manufacturing.

🔗 Industry takeaway: Broadcasters must embrace IP-based and automation solutions to stay competitive.

2️⃣ The Future of Power for Radio Stations
The issue raises a critical discussion on power supply reliability for radio operations.

🔋 Cris Alexander’s article on generator power at KBRT (Costa Mesa, CA) highlights how radio stations must prepare for long power outages. With utilities like Southern California Edison shutting down power for wildfire prevention, stations must:
⚡ Ensure fuel reserves for backup generators.
⚡ Maintain multiple power sources to prevent being off-air.
⚡ Consider battery backup systems for critical components.

⚠️ Challenge: The rising demand for electricity due to AI, electric vehicles, and Bitcoin mining is expected to strain the power grid. Broadcasters must rethink energy solutions to avoid operational risks.

3️⃣ Women in Broadcast Engineering
Radio World continues its Women in Engineering (WIE) series, showcasing professionals like:
👩‍🔧 Megan Amoss (Baltimore Public Media) – Leading the integration of two radio stations.
👩‍💻 Shayna Sengstock (New York Public Radio) – From journalism to technical direction.
👩‍🎓 Jade He (NEP Group) – Navigating a career in radio engineering.

📢 Key insights:
- Mentorship is crucial for women entering the field.
- Diversity in engineering roles is growing, but challenges remain.
- Soft skills + technical expertise = career success.

🚀 Encouraging more women in STEM is vital for the industry’s future!

4️⃣ Regulatory and Industry Trends
📡 💥FCC Station Count Report 💥
- Educational FM stations (4,477) now outnumber AM stations (4,383).
- 💥The decline of AM stations continues, while FM translator numbers stabilize.
- 💥LPFM stations (1,968) are expected to grow.

⚖️ FCC Fines & Compliance
- Idaho amateur radio operator fined $34,000 for interfering with emergency communications.
- Stations must maintain proper documentation for licensing, STL authorizations, and chief operator details.

5️⃣ Business and People News
🏢 Personnel Moves:
- Alan Jurison (formerly iHeartMedia) joins Quu Inc. to improve metadata management.
- Kim Savage promoted to VP at Dielectric.
- Mike Pappas named SVP of Sales at Orban.

📢 Advertising Trends:
- Radio World promotes its 2025 Studio Showcase eBook, highlighting major studio upgrades at Cumulus, SiriusXM, and Audacy.

Final Thoughts
📡 Radio World’s February issue is packed with insights into the future of radio broadcasting, power security, and diversity in engineering.

🚀 Key takeaways:
✅ Invest in AoIP and automation to stay ahead.
✅ Prepare for power challenges with lgenerators and alternative energy sources.
✅ Encourage more women in radio engineering through mentorship.
✅ Monitor regulatory changes to maintain compliance.

💡 The radio industry is evolving rapidly, and staying informed is key!
