This physical heaviness is a real symptom of an exhausted nervous system. When your brain is overwhelmed by the work of grieving, it conserves energy by slowing physical functions. This isn't laziness; it's your body entering a low-power mode to survive an immense emotional demand.

Ever find yourself struggling to speak? Like the words are stuck, or you suddenly develop a stutter? 🗣️🚫

This is a physical 'freeze' response:

🧠 Overwhelm: When a situation feels too demanding, your nervous system can go into a shutdown state.

⚡️ Vagus Nerve: This state directly impacts your Vagus Nerve, which controls the muscles in your voice box (larynx).

🗣️ The Result: Your throat can physically tighten, making speech difficult, slow, or stuttered.

Your body is physically muting you to protect you from what it perceives as an overwhelming interaction. Be patient with your voice. ❤️‍🩹

Try humming to yourself. The vibration can soothe the Vagus Nerve and gently relax your throat.

We explore the nervous system's response to grief in our newsletter.

Places hold memories, and your body knows it. Your brain strongly links locations with emotional experiences. ❤️‍🩹 As you approach a significant spot, your nervous system anticipates the emotional impact, physically bracing your body for a memory that feels like a collision.

Anger is a deeply physical part of grief, not a moral failing. It's the "fight" in your body's "fight-or-flight" response, a surge of adrenaline against the profound threat of loss. This physical heat and tension is your body's primal energy, pushing back against a deep helplessness.

🕰 Grief can flip your sleep schedule.
You’re wide awake at night.
You’re crushed with fatigue by noon.
And no matter how early you go to bed — your body won’t follow.

It’s not a willpower issue.
It’s your circadian rhythm, thrown off by grief.

Here’s what happens inside 👇

💥 After loss, your body releases cortisol at the wrong times.
→ Instead of waking you up gently in the morning, it spikes at night — keeping you alert and wired.

🌙 Meanwhile, melatonin — your sleep hormone — stays low.
→ Your body can’t shift into “rest” mode, even when you’re exhausted.

🌀 It’s not insomnia.
It’s nervous system chaos.
And your body needs support, not pressure.

✨ Try this gentle reset tonight:
Sit by a warm light for 15 min.
Inhale 4, exhale 6.
Whisper:
“You’re safe to slow down.”

Snapping at everyone.. Feeling a constant, simmering rage just under the surface..
This is the 'fight' response to grief:

⚡️ Survival Energy: Grief floods your body with adrenaline, creating immense energy for a physical fight.

🎯 No Target: But the "enemy"—death, illness, loss—is intangible. The energy has nowhere to go.

💥 The Result: This trapped energy can explode as a short fuse, impatience, and outbursts of anger.

Your anger is a sign of your deep love and the profound injustice of your loss. It is a protective force. ❤️‍🩹

Try safely discharging this energy: squeeze a stress ball, scream into a pillow, or go for a brisk walk.

Some phrases become neurologically linked to a specific person in our memory. Hearing it unexpectedly is like a key turning a lock in your brain. ❤️‍🩹Your body's sharp, automatic reaction is a testament to that deep conditioning, preparing to greet someone who is no longer there.

Ever feel physically fragile.. Like your bones ache with a strange brittleness, as if you could shatter?

This is a deep somatic response to loss:

🛡️ Loss of Safety: The person you lost was likely a huge source of emotional or physical safety for your nervous system.

🌍 Unsafe World: Without them, the world can register as a more dangerous place. Your body reflects this vulnerability.

🥶 Freeze Response: This feeling can be part of a "freeze" state, where the body feels helpless and fragile before a threat.

You are feeling the absence of their protection in your very bones. Honour this feeling of fragility. ❤️‍🩹

Try wrapping yourself in a heavy blanket. The pressure can help your body feel more contained and secure.

This "grief brain" is not you losing your mind; it's a sign of cognitive overload. Grieving is an immense, resource-heavy task for your brain. It monopolizes your mental energy, leaving less available for things like simple word recall.❤️‍🩹 Your processor is just busy with a bigger task.
