MiG-29G (9-12) Fulcrum 32 Aerial Kills 1 Loss in Enduring Confrontation Air Simulator Battles

Not a bad start on my transition from cyclic to manual radar cueing. I’ve noticed that my radar usage has become more tactical and less frequent, giving me more of an element of surprise compared to using cyclic. I also learned to use the IRST in manual cueing mode, a bit confusing at first but manageable. I just wish I had the R-27T/ETs already; there were moments where they would’ve been perfect to use. Manual cueing also taught me not to rely on Radar/IRST search for targets that are already close and visible to the naked eye, but instead to use HMD PD/IR for those situations. Manual cueing is still a bit difficult, and I’ll definitely need more practice and experience before I can be fully confident with it. What’s great though is that my radar no longer gets distracted in fights where it might detect two or more enemy planes, it now stays focused on the specific target I select.

This is how I practice my Defensive BVR routine: I go to TestFlight.

In BVR, one thing you should never ever do is give away your advantageous position, and that’s altitude.

If you give up altitude too easily, you’ll get pushed. Flying too low in an attempt to multipath a missile is risky, because the radar’s ground-clutter filtering will ignore your chaff; with that feature, it simply tracks anything that moves. On top of that, if the missile is launched in a top-down datalink shot or carries a high-TNT warhead, your chances of successfully multipathing are very slim.

With a method called Vertical Notching, you can fight and defend without sacrificing your altitude advantage, while still applying notching principles and changing your aspect to deny Fox-3 missiles fired at you.

In the first clip, I showcase how I apply this in RB settings, and in the second clip, how it works in SB settings.

I replaced the AIM-9L/I-1s in my loadouts with AIM-9Ms because of recent visual changes to the missile trail; I no longer have trust issues about launching them.

Harrier GR.1 169 Aerial Kills w/ 51 Losses in Enduring Confrontation Air Simulator Battles

I really enjoy the new SRAAM fix, it feels much better and more fun than before. The only downside is that the Harrier GR.1 doesn’t have flares. Combined with its poor rearward visibility, you’re very vulnerable to surprise missile attacks. Even if you spot them, there’s often nothing you can do without countermeasures. Using rockets as improvised decoys is an option, but they add extra drag and weight, which hurts your performance in dogfights.

MiG-29A (9-12) Fulcrum 18 Aerial Kills 0 Loss in Enduring Confrontation Air Simulator Battles

Using IRST proved decisive, as I relied on the element of surprise. Even without the R-73E like the MiG-29G, I was still able to shoot down top-tier aircraft at 14.3 while uptiering the MiG-29A. All I did was use IRST to find and lock enemies; once I was in the no-escape zone, I fired my R-27R1, and by then it was already too late for the enemy to evade. I didn’t even need to spawn my Eurofighter.

I’m really enjoying my hunts in these Fulcrums. They may not have a reliable RWR, but the IRST is by far their best feature

✠MiG-29G (9-12) Fulcrum 14 Aerial Kills 0 Loss in Enduring Confrontation Air Simulator Battles

I enjoyed my Fulcrum experience despite it being stock. Thanks to my MiG-23MLA IRST experience, I was able to hunt effectively in my new MiG-29G with less radar usage. It comes with four stock missiles: 2× R-27R1 and 2× R-73E, which are more than enough to shoot down enemies one by one. I love the IRST. I first find and lock enemies using the IRST, and because it has a rangefinder for the missiles, I select the R-27R1 and check whether I’m within range while sneaking up on my target. Once I’m in the no-escape-zone range, I switch from IR lock to radar lock and fire the R-27R1, shooting the enemy down with the element of surprise.

It might not have the best radar or RWR compared to its enemies, but the IRST allows me to attack with surprise. In the air, there are three core advantages: speed, altitude, and surprise. You need at least two of them to survive. In the Fulcrum, I relied on speed and surprise.

One warning, though: the fuel consumption is crazy. I had to run with full internal fuel and a drop tank. After takeoff, I go into afterburner to empty the drop tank quickly while getting into an advantageous position, then switch to military power once the tank is jettisoned. I usually return to base with 13–15 minutes of internal fuel remaining, because if you enter a fight with that little left, it’s a high risk.

I just got myself an F-104G Starfighter and some MiG-29A/G Fulcrums. It’s funny that I’m late to them, but it’s never too late to appreciate these aeroplanes.
