Testing My Student’s Rafale C F3-R – Demonstrating IRST Camera Usage and HOBS BVR Jousting in SIM

In the first clip, I demonstrate how to effectively hunt using the Rafale’s IRST (Infrared Search and Track) camera, where I engaged and shot down an enemy MiG-29. It’s very simple to use: first, disable sight stabilization, then either IRST-lock or TWS-track the target. The camera will automatically lock onto it.

Under normal conditions, I’d operate like a stealth fighter—avoiding radar emissions altogether. However, since the Rafale can’t fire Fox-3 missiles via IRST, I’m still forced to use radar. If I had access to MICA IR missiles, I’d rely on IRST more often, especially in stealth scenarios. But in matches like this—aggressively full of players and set on a terrain-heavy map like Spain—accidental merges are likely, and I can’t afford to lower my guard. That’s why I kept the radar active to ensure survivability.

That said, I got a little too carried away with the IRST camera and ended up wing-ripping my student’s Rafale. My apologies for that. Just a heads-up: be cautious when overspeeding or making aggressive maneuvers in the Rafale—its wings are quite fragile at high speeds.

In the second clip, while I was jousting, a Su-30SM managed to sneak behind me and fire a Fox-3. Fortunately, I had both altitude and speed in my favor, taking advantage of the Rafale’s excellent acceleration. I went cold, dispensed a few chaff, and outran the missile. The R-77-1 is energetic and has a lower drag coefficient than the standard R-77, but since the Su-30SM fired from low altitude, the missile had to cut through dense air—reducing its energy in the process. Always stay calm in these situations and don’t panic—trust the process of your BVR defense.

In the third clip, once I defeated the Su-30SM’s missiles, I noticed through my HMD that my teammates were keeping it occupied. I re-engaged and showcased how to perform HOBS (High Off-Boresight) BVR jousting. I slewed my radar to the left and narrowed the scan zone for a faster refresh rate, then fired a Fox-3 and shot down the Su-30SM that had attacked me earlier.

I want to congratulate one of my strongest Filipino students, MisuzukiSensei, for graduating from my Richthofen Air Academy by defeating me 3:0 in our Graduation Rank Duels, using his preferred aircraft—the Mirage 2000C-S4—which is now officially recognized as his specialized aircraft. Due to his superb flying, he became the top-ranked student in my class record for the 1v1 Student Rankings Challenge, and his LAWIN Team dominated the Student Rank War team battles. I am truly honored and incredibly proud to be your teacher. o7!

Replacing my old CAS loadout—which carried 2x LJDAM-ERs that only tickled ground targets—with Paveway IVs was a great decision. Since the Paveway IV allows 2 bombs per pylon, I was able to carry 4 in total, and they did not disappoint. I completely destroyed 4 ground targets with them.

Huge thanks to my student Hydro1604 for recommending me Paveway IVs.

Testing my student's JF-17 Block 1 to demonstrate how to aim its GSh-23mm cannon, which is mounted under the belly and angled slightly downward. Since the aircraft lacks EEGS, aiming becomes even more challenging. The student's gun is still stock, so we're using the default belts. The best setup is a gun targeting distance of 400 meters with Vertical Targeting enabled—this helps align shots with the crosshair, compensating for the gun’s downward angle.

This is my student’s POV of our Eurofighter vs Su-30SM duel. I’m the enemy Eurofighter he shot down with a perfectly timed Kulbit reversal into a gun kill. Massive respect—he earned that shot, and I’m super proud of him.

This is my student’s POV of our Hornet Duel. I, the enemy, execute a combined J-Turn and Pirouette maneuver during a rolling scissors in the F/A-18C Hornet, showcasing the Hornet's sharp responsiveness and the surgical precision of its Vulcan cannon.

I changed my CAS loadout on the EF-2000 for Sim, replacing the LJDAM-ER with Paveway IVs because I’ve been frustrated recently—the LJDAM-ER barely damages ground targets and rarely destroys them. Hopefully, the Paveway IVs won't disappoint this time. The great thing is that I can carry four of them, which means four potential ground kills.

Testing my student's JF-17 Blk.1 to demonstrate how to hunt in Sim.

In the first clip, I showcased the weakness of the JF-17’s radar — it has a slow refresh rate, even when set to its thinnest scan. The enemy F-16C Block 50 easily notched my SD-10, a Fox-3 missile that is a shorter-range variant of the PL-12. I then lost both radar contact and visual of the enemy in the clouds. As a result, I hid in the clouds myself, turned off my radar, and escaped safely.

Only attack if you can win. If you can’t, run away fast — there’s a thin line between cowardice and cleverness.

In the second clip, after hiding in the clouds, I spotted an enemy F/A-18C Hornet intercepting an attacker aircraft. I flanked the Hornet, gained the advantage by moving into its six o’clock position, and fired a PL-5EII — a fast and hard-to-flare Fox-2 missile.

In the final clip, while still concealed in the clouds, I noticed an enemy contrailing. I used that opportunity to intercept the enemy F-15E Strike Eagle.

Always remember: avoid contrail altitudes — they give away your intentions and compromise your location.

Joined an ongoing Sim match in my Eurofighter and clutched the win. I like the new radar fix on my Eurofighter — it's slightly more reliable than before.
