Dexter Gordon was an "enormous" character in all respects, not only for the grandeur of his build, a two meter tall giant, with gentle manners, elegant in his bearing who in the following years, for many, also became known as the nickname "Sophisticated Giant". It is historically proven that he had a clear influence on the development of the tenor saxophone, managing to be a point of confluence between Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins. Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane were initially fascinated by it. In the last years of his career he also proved to be a valid actor: in 1986 he was the protagonist of Bertrand Tavernier's film "Round Midnight". Dexter played his saxophone in a virile and muscular way, relaxed and confident but also unpredictable in his solos, sensual and delicate in his phrasing, with the instinctive ability to squeeze every drop of emotion from a melodic phrase, elegantly and without ever being melodramatic or sloppy.
His career had already begun in the 1940s, but was then wrecked in the following decade due to his he**in addiction with which he fought hard. In Lion's eyes this gentle giant now appeared free from his demons and fascinated by his talent, on November 7 of the same year he signed him for his label, publishing two first titles the following year, «Doin' Allright» and «Dexter Calling» .
In 1962 Lion organized for Gordon, who was now close to his fortieth birthday, a new recording session with a younger rhythm section than the previous ones, composed of the thirty-one-year-old pianist Sonny Clark together with two musicians still in their twenties: the bassist Edward "Butch" Warren and drummer Billy Higgins, with whom Gordon had already played on Herbie Hancock's debut album, «Takin' Off», three months earlier.
Thus was born "Go", still among the five best-selling albums in the Blue Note catalog and among the Top 100 in the entire history of jazz; a title not so revolutionary as to be considered seminal, but perfectly structured and executed from the first to the last note, which leaves us a legacy of important original compositions and which represents the full essence of Gordon and the way in which he embodied the “bepop”, his choice music. He himself declared that this album remained his favorite forever.
