The Misfits, a 1961 American drama directed by John Huston with a screenplay by Arthur Miller, features Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter, and Eli Wallach. Notably, it was the last film for both Gable and Monroe, and one of the final roles for Clift.

The film tells the story of a newly divorced woman (Monroe) who spends time with a cowboy (Gable) and his friend (Clift) in the Nevada desert in the early 1960s. While not initially successful commercially, The Misfits was praised by critics for its writing and the actors' performances.

These images capture Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Misfits in Nevada during 1960, taken by director John Huston himself.

This extraordinary photograph, taken around 1910, captures a scene inside a Kodak camera store. A woman dressed in the popular Gibson Girl style stands at the counter, seemingly purchasing a Kodak folding camera. The store employee, wearing a jacket and bow-tie, adds to the photograph's vintage charm. While it's uncertain whether the transaction is genuine or staged for promotional purposes, the $25 price tag visible near a Kodak folding camera on the cash register aligns with the approximate cost of such a camera during that era.

The very first Ferris Wheel was built for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. This came about because the previous World's Fair in Paris had featured the Eiffel Tower, which became a global sensation. Not wanting to be outdone by the innovative French, America enlisted an engineer named George Washington Gale Ferris to design a landmark that would be distinctly American.

This original Ferris Wheel, often called the Chicago Wheel, was unveiled to the public on June 21, 1893. Towering at a height of 264 feet, it was the biggest draw of the exposition. The wheel turned on an enormous 71-ton axle that measured 45.5 feet long. This axle was the largest hollow forging of its time, crafted in Pittsburgh by the Bethlehem Iron Company and weighing a hefty 89,320 pounds. Additionally, the structure included two massive cast-iron supports, each 16 feet in diameter and weighing 53,031 pounds.

Interestingly, George Ferris started his career working with railroads before developing an interest in building bridges. Recognizing the increasing importance of strong steel in construction, he established his own company, G.W.G. Ferris & Co., in Pittsburgh. This firm specialized in testing and inspecting metals for both railroad and bridge construction projects.

Old photographs have a strange way of drawing us in. Sometimes, when we look at these old pictures, our brains play tricks on us, making us see people who look familiar. It could be someone who reminds us of a family member, a friend, or even a modern-day celebrity. It's like our minds trying to connect us to the past by finding familiar faces in unfamiliar times.

Think about the photos of celebrities getting arrested that we often see online or on TV. They usually don't look very glamorous. Now, compare those to the police photos, called mugshots, that were taken way back in the 1920s. Surprisingly, those old mugshots often have a strange kind of beauty to them. The people in them might have been criminals, but the photos themselves look almost like they were carefully posed and lit, unlike the often unflattering mugshots we see of celebrities today.

An artist named Michael Jason Enriquez was really struck by this difference. He saw some old police mugshots from the 1920s that were found in Australia. He thought they looked so much more interesting than the celebrity mugshots we see all the time. So, he came up with a project called "Mugshot Doppelgänger." The idea was to take modern celebrity mugshots – the kind you might see on a gossip website – and reimagine them as if they were taken in the 1920s.

Enriquez started with Lindsay Lohan because there were many different arrest photos of her. When he put her photos next to old mugshots that had similar features, it reminded him of those internet jokes about Nicolas Cage having a historical doppelgänger, like he was a vampire or a time traveler. So, Enriquez continued the project with other celebrities like Mel Gibson and Khloe Kardashian. He wanted to take these very common, often unflattering celebrity arrest photos and turn them into something that had the eerie beauty and composed look of those vintage 1920s mugshots. It's like taking the lowest form of photography and trying to make it into something worth looking at.

This resourceful itinerant knife grinder in the past invented a clever adaptation to his bicycle setup for long journeys. To alleviate the strain of pulling his trailer, which contained his motor-driven grinding equipment, he devised a system to reverse the roles. When he became fatigued, he would hitch the motor to the bicycle's wheels, allowing the trailer to then propel him forward. This "cart-before-the-horse" arrangement provided a motorized assist for his travels.

In 1939, lipstick was available in various flavors, similar to gum and soda pop, catering to individual preferences. This stick-form lip rouge came in a wide array of fruit and beverage flavors, such as peach, apricot, rye, champagne, banana, and pineapple. The photograph shows three young women sampling orange, wine, and pineapple-flavored lipsticks.

In 1934, physicists at Purdue University announced the development of a miniature refrigerator designed to be worn on the wrist like a watch for cooling the entire body in hot weather. This device, slightly larger than a wristwatch, contained a pellet of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide). 1 As the dry ice sublimated into an invisible gas, the escaping gas cooled the wrist, similar to pouring cold water. This process lowered the temperature of the blood in the arteries, which then circulated throughout the body, providing a cooling effect.

The metal casing of the device was insulated from the skin using rubber to prevent burns, as dry ice has a temperature of -109 degrees Fahrenheit. With proper insulation, the physicists assured that the device could be worn safely.

Although not quite so good as a steel helmet, the black derby hat owned by an Englishman living on the east coast was a handy headpiece to have along in the event of an enemy air raid. For inside of his bowler, this Britisher has pasted a map on which the location of local air-raid shelters was plainly marked. When an air-raid alarm sounds, he has merely to doff his bombing bonnet and look inside it to find the location of the nearest underground hide-out.
