Our Story
Back in August 2011, a group of like-minded enthusiasts gathered together in Haddington to discuss the possibility of creating a community radio station to serve the county of East Lothian.
Soon after we acquired a small property in the town and fitted it out with some basic equipment and named the station East Lothian FM. Broadcasting commenced on the online on the 10th October 2011. Since then we have been broadcasting 24/7 and our listening audience has grown to astonishing levels.
In 2013, we were awarded a grant from Awards for All (Scotland) and then moved to new studios in Tranent. At this time and in view of our ever increasing popularity, we also decided to re-brand the station and introduce a new station name that was synonymous with East Lothian. The ‘Saltire’ – Scotland’s national Flag, is reputed to have been created in the village of Athelstaneford, right here in East Lothian during a battle way back in the 9th Century. We felt that this world famous icon, truly synonymous with our great nation, was an ideal name for what was fast becoming East Lothians station of choice.
In September 2013, Radio Saltire rose like a Phoenix out of the ashes that were once East Lothian FM and a month later we achieved full charitable status.
In August 2014, we outgrew our studio and acquired much more suitable premises just down the road in Tranent’s Civic Square, giving us plenty of room to grow with two fully operational studios, a staff room with both back office and reception facilities.
We are a Community Radio Station now also broadcasting across East Lothian on FM and we welcome people of all ages and walks of life who might be interested in finding out more about what we do and what we have to offer to get in touch
We can offer full training and ongoing support for those interested in all aspects of broadcasting both as a hobby or even as a future career. We provide a valuable ‘Community Service’ and help promote not for profit community and charity events throughout East Lothian.
We also offer very attractive advertising packages for those wishing to advertise with us.
If you would like to contact us to find out more then please send us an email at [email protected] and we will get right back to you.
