East Lothian Elf was delighted to return to Radio Saltire Community News , one of Scotland's leading online community radio stations (also available at DAB, 106.7 & 107.2 FM). Mike was very impressed with how much EL Elf had gotten up to in the last few weeks. After playing a couple songs, he listened in on an interview with Jenny, CEO of Carers of East Lothian Carers Centre (her on air debut as CEO in fact)!

EL Elf continues to be really proud to be part of spreading the word about CoEL and all the good they do for the Unpaid Carers across East Lothian. CoEL aims to support ALL adults in a caring situation in East Lothian to get information and services to help their individual caring role, enhance their own wellbeing and strengthen their collective voice to improve services.

Our Story

Back in August 2011, a group of like-minded enthusiasts gathered together in Haddington to discuss the possibility of creating a community radio station to serve the county of East Lothian.

Soon after we acquired a small property in the town and fitted it out with some basic equipment and named the station East Lothian FM. Broadcasting commenced on the online on the 10th October 2011. Since then we have been broadcasting 24/7 and our listening audience has grown to astonishing levels.

In 2013, we were awarded a grant from Awards for All (Scotland) and then moved to new studios in Tranent. At this time and in view of our ever increasing popularity, we also decided to re-brand the station and introduce a new station name that was synonymous with East Lothian. The ‘Saltire’ – Scotland’s national Flag, is reputed to have been created in the village of Athelstaneford, right here in East Lothian during a battle way back in the 9th Century. We felt that this world famous icon, truly synonymous with our great nation, was an ideal name for what was fast becoming East Lothians station of choice.

In September 2013, Radio Saltire rose like a Phoenix out of the ashes that were once East Lothian FM and a month later we achieved full charitable status.
