An average annual inflation rate of 2.6% leaves Bulgaria in uncertainty for joining the eurozone from January 1, 2026, according to data from the National Statistical Institute.
According to the Maastricht criteria, inflation in Bulgaria should not exceed the inflation rate of the three best-performing EU member states by more than 1.5%. The average inflation rate in these three countries is 1.07%, which means that the maximum allowable threshold in Bulgaria should be 2.57%, or 0.03% lower than the measured inflation rate.
The leader of the largest Bulgarian party GERB (EPP), Boyko Borissov, commented that his party will summon the head of the National Statistical Institute to parliament to explain to everyone how the inflation data is calculated.
According to the Maastricht criteria inflation should not exceed 2.57%.
