In 2020, I came across a pilot mentorship program organized by a fantastic women-led organization called Bay Area Women in Publishing (www.bayareawomeninpublishing.com).

At the time, I was struggling to understand many aspects of the publishing business, so taking some time to send in an application to be paired with a seasoned mentor was one of the best decisions I ever made! I embrace opportunities to share the knowledge I’ve acquired throughout my 20+ year career in publishing, particularly through mentoring. I’ve participated in formal programs and casual advisories over the years, and was part of ’s pilot mentorship program in 2020.

I was lucky to be paired with , who along with her childhood friend , founded a bilingual English-Bangla children’s publishing company called . It was a fortuitous match, as my experience in early stage publishing helped inform several key areas of their emerging business.

Once the six month BAWiP program ended, Raya and I continued our meetings, and brought Inshra into them as well. Our mentoring relationship continues to this day, and it's been tremendously fun to see Raya and Inshra achieve new milestones. I feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments—among them winning awards, expanding their distribution, hiring staff, and authoring popular new books. They continue to grow and produce high quality picture books, board books, and flashcards that are sold around the world.

Giving advice and encouragement to others is rewarding in itself, but also allows me to pay back the support that others gave me when I was starting out. If you’re seeking a mentor, or looking for an opportunity to be a mentor, please DM me—I’d love to share any resources that might be helpful.

Reading aloud to children hugely benefits their cognitive and literacy skills. It encourages them to be imaginative and bold in their expressions! Thank you to our wonderful author Asma Ul Husna Sanchita (“I am Bokul”) for delighting school children with her lovely book reading and author presentations at ISD and Springdale International schools in Dhaka during Pohela Phalgun celebrations 🌺🌼📚

We love school book fairs! Springdale International School is hosting a book fair and all our books will be there, with other cool publishers. The fair is open to the public on February 14th.
