A touching story about My friend David
David worked late at night, actually worked till morning coz he had a night shift at the airport. Normally he would get into his house, take a shower, then wake up late to do a few things here and there before going back to work, but this was not a normal day. He lived alone and all the time cursed the city council for not clearing the bush that was growing around his house. On this day, David walked with his eyes half open, imagining how it would feel to hit the shower's then lie down on his bed. As he was just about to enter his house , he had a groan in the bush, at first he thought he had heard some animals making noise and didn't pay much attention. The sound came back again and this time, David could tell that it was someone making that sound. He approached cautiously and to his surprise, found a woman lying on the ground, her clothes were tattered, she had bruises on her face and her face was swollen. It was like she had broken ribs coz she was trying hard to breath. David was shocked, he wanted to help the woman but was afraid to get involved. He called the watchman who had no idea how the lady got there. She appeared to be in critical condition and it was apparent that she needed urgent medical attention. David called a cab and together with his neighbours who had come to see what was happening put her in the cab after a lady wrapped her with a leso and proceeded to the hospital. As they headed for Kenyatta, David could not help but wonder what he was getting himself into. But his heart could not let the woman die if there was anything he could do.
Part 2
Davids thinking was that he would drop her at the casualty center then go back home. When he arrived, he got a stretcher for her to lie down as she waited to be attended. She has no one to wheel her around and David had no choice but to stick around. The nurse quickly attended to her asking David all kind of questions which he had no answer to. He didn't know her name, age, where she was from, he knew nothing about her. He told them that he was just a good Samaritan and they asked him to stick around since there was no one else for her. David found himself paying afew things here and there for her to be attended and it was clear that she needed urgent medical attention and also had to be admitted. By the time they were getting in the process of admission, David realized that he could not make it to work. He called his boss and explained the situation. He was tired, he had spent the whole night working, now the whole day had been spent at Kenyatta. Finally at around 7, she got a bed and was wheeled to the wards. David was happy that he had been able to help her as much as he could. The doctors told him that she would be taken to theatre the following day and since it would take time, he could go and come back to check on her in the morning. As David left the hospital, he had no intention of going back, he believed he had done everything he had to do, but he was wrong
Part 3
David slept and what surprised him was, immediately he woke up, he started preparing himself to go to the hospital. He thought he had forgotten about the woman but found himself wanting to know what happened to her after the surgery. He prepared himself , took a taxi headed to the hospital. He approached the doctor and explained that he had brought a patient last night and she had been due for sugery. They asked him her name which he could not give since he didn't know. Luckily, a nurse recognized him and asked him to follow her. She led him inside a ward where they found her lying in bed with breathing aides on her nose. The nurse told him the operation was successful and they were just waiting for her to recover now. David was left with her and he stood there looking at her, she had bandages all over and he felt sad that she had to undergo such an ordeal. After staying for some time, David had to go to work and resolved to go back the following day to check on her. Why was he feeling so much attached to her yet he knew nothing about her. The following day at 1 he was there. He found her bed empty and felt a sudden wave of sadness feel his heart. He was anxious about her whereabouts and thought she had passed away. He literary ran to the nurse asking her what happened to the patient who was on that bed. The nurse told him not to worry, just that she had recovered well and had moved her from HDU to a normal ward. David was relieved when he saw her. She had no tubes on her nose and was breathing normally. He stood there just staring at her and nearly jumped when she opened her eyes and looked straight at him
Part 4
He didn't know what to say, what to do, what would she think of him just standing there staring at him, David asked himself. She just stared at him like she was trying to think who he was and what he was doing there. David smiled at her to give he reassurance that he meant no harm. He then stepped out and called a nurse. The nurse took her vitals and told David that she was recovering well. Now that she could see him, David wondered what she would think of him, she couldn't talk. Everyday, David would go to the ward to check on her. She had not spoken a word since she opened her eyes and David could tell that she was beginning to like his presence since every time he stepped in the room, her eyes would lit up and he could tell she was happy to see him. He was not surprised that he had been the only visitor visiting her. Soon, she began to take some juice and David would make sure that he brought some every time he visited. He bought her fruits and he could tell that she really enjoyed them. The bandages prevented her from eating properly and David would sit on her bed to help her eat. David longed to go and visit her. He bought the usual things and walked in the ward with a smile on his face, looked around for his patient but could not see her. It wasn't until she smiled that he recognized her. They had removed her bandages and she was extremely beautiful. Even with the cuts and bruises, David could tell she was a beautiful woman. She had lovely big eyes that made him feel like she could see right through him. He walked towards her and handed her the fruits. Thank you, she said. It was the first time David had heard her talk. He found himself confused, not knowing what to say. She just sat on the bed and watched her as she ate. The nurse called him aside and told him that she was now okay and could be discharged anytime. Problem was, she had no idea who she was and had no place to go.
Part 5
What, now what do we do, David asked the nurse. Problem is, we have no one to call to come and get her, she doesn't even know who she is leave alone where she is from. The only thing we can do is to keep her here until she regains her memory that is, if she ever will, but as you can see, the environment here is not very much conducive, she needs a home like environment. What if she comes to my place, David found himself asking. If you are willing to take her in we have no problem, after all, you are the closest thing to a family she has. The hospital waived her bill and David found himself wheeling her to a cab he had hired to take her home. She was quiet. She looked at him now and then like she was not sure whether she could trust him or not. She still couldn't walk and David had to carry her to the couch once they got to the house. She sat there looking lost. David could see her eyes welling up like she wanted to cry. He felt bad that she was feeling like that. He bent on his knees near where she was sitting and looked at her. Am sorry, he said to her, am sorry that you feel the way you are feeling but I don't know what to do, I wish I knew your name or someone close to you but I don't, this is the only place I could take you to. Please don't be afraid of me, feel comfortable, feel safe, am not going to let anything bad happen to you and once you are strong, you can leave. But if you still feel not safe with me, I can call the police and they can find a safer place for you to go. David made as if to leave and felt her hand holding his. Please don't call the police, she said. You are the only one I know, yes am afraid but you are the closest thing to a family I know, she said crying. Don't cry, my house is open to you anytime you need it. He said putting his other hand on her palm. Let me go and make us something to eat. As David cooked , he constantly peeped at the sitting room just to have a glimpse of her, my my, she was beautiful.
Part 6
David couldn't sleep, all he thought of was the gal sleeping in the next room. There was something about her that pulled him to her, he liked her, he felt that all he wanted to do was to keep her safe. Even at workplace, all he thought of was her. He longed for his shift to end so that he could rush home and cook for her. She had become comfortable with him and felt safe in his hands. She relaxed and was now smiling more often, David loved to hear her laugh, when she laughed , even the neighbours could hear her laughing, it was such a warm laugh and for the first time, David began feeling his house becoming a home. David walked in the house and was shocked not to see her on the couch, she rarely moved and he would find her just where he had left her. He had provided some walking aides just to assist her get to the bathroom which she rarely did unless he was there to assist her. He would take her to the bathroom, make sure she was comfortable and leave, then come to carry her back. When he walked in the house, he couldn't see her and his heart skipped. He walked in the kitchen and saw the most beautiful sight he had ever seen, she was standing by herself and was busy cutting some onions with tears in her eyes coz of the onions. Please, don't bother yourself with this, that's why am here, David said trying to assist her to sit down. No no no, you have helped me for a long time, please let me cook for you, she said looking at him. I don't know my name, I don't know who I am but surprisingly I can remember all there is about cooking. Please, sit back and let me cook something for you. David walked to his bedroom, took a shower and waited to be served. Yaaani si kuna wanaume hufurahi, he said to himself. The last time someone cooked for him he couldn't even remember. She was good, she was really good, her food was nice, prepared in a way that only someone trained could have prepared. Were you a chef, David asked, I really love your food, you should cook more often, David said. If you let me, I will cook for you, she said sitting down. David, she called him, David, who am I, why can't I remember my name, what if I never remember who I was, you might get tired of me and I don't know where i would go if you got tired of me, she said looking concerned. First of all, remove that thought of me getting tired of you from your head, this house has not been the same since you came, for the first time , I look foward to coming home, to tell you the truth, sometimes I am abit worried that once you remember your name you might leave me and not look back. You are welcome to stay until the time you feel that its right for you to leave. David, she said coming to sit next to him, you make me feel safe, you make me feel like a woman again, am pretty sure I have never felt the way am feeling right now. David, she said, touching his cheek and kissing him. This caught David by surprise, she had such sweet lips. He kisser her back and she sank in his arms. Make love to me David, she said. David had been looking foward to the day he would make love to her, he stood and lifted her from the couch heading towards the bedroom. Just near the door to his bedroom, he turned and brought her back to the couch. She looked at him confused. Please don't get me wrong, David said to her, I want so much to make love to you, I want it so bad I can taste it, but it won't be right. What happens if we make love and then you remember that you are happily married, or you realize you don't like guys like me, or you are a nun, you would hate me for the rest of your life, its like making love to someone who is drank, if it happens between us, I want it to be between two people who are consciously aware a hundred percent what they are doing and who they are, you don't even know your name. I like you a lot, but I can't do this to you, am sorry
Part 7
David felt bad that he had to disappoint his new found friend, but how could he make love to someone whom he didn't even know the name. She looked disappointed and David feared that she might decide to run away and that thought worried him a lot. The following day he decided not to go to work just to keep a watchful eye over her. The silence in the house was deafening, David hated that they were not talking to each other and to make the matter worse, he didn't even know what was on her mind. The sat on the couch watching cartoon and once in a while they would both laugh. David, she called all of a sudden. He turned to see her on her knees just next to him. She took his hand and looked at him. I know am mad about what didn't happen last night, actually I was mad, but I have been thinking about it since it happened and I don't know whether there are men like you out there. It was and is foolish of me to be mad at you just coz of trying to protect me. I now understand why you did what you did and I respect you for that. I feel even more safer with you coz now I know for sure that you are not in this just to have me in bed. With all my heart, accept my apology and I thank you for respecting me as a woman. David helped her to sit down. Am glad that you feel this way . I was worried that you might decide to run away and that would have devastated me. Kumbe that's why you didn't go to work, she asked smiling. Yes, I was afraid I might go for work and come back to an empty house, that would have killed me. You know, my biggest fear is that you will remember and find out that you have a family somewhere and eventually leave me, as much as I would be happy for you, that would actually kill me. I know its selfish of me but sometimes am happy that you can't remember who you are, David said to her. As they sat there talking, there was a knock at the door. David went to open the door and the next thing he felt was a fist on his jaw.
Part 8
He fell down on the floor hitting his head hard. What are you doing with my wife, David heard someone shouting. As another fist landed on him, He heard his friend shouting asking the men to leave him alone. Niva, am going to kill you now once and for all, the voice shouted. David tried to get up and just as they were about to get their hands on his friend, he heard commotions outside and his neighbours shouting ua wezi!!!!. The last thing he heard was Niva coming to his side trying to help him up, then there was total darkness.
Part 9
David was not moving, he lay motionless as the men went about beating him up, his friend screamed cursing her husband and the neighbours responded. They blocked the path of the assailants as they tried to flee upon realizing that things were getting ugly. The neighbours actually thought they were thieves and Niva could hear her husband trying to plead with them telling them that he had come for his wife. The problem was, once the mob had tasted blood, there was no turning back, they set on him and his three friends with fist and crude weapons and soon they were lying on the ground motionless. Niva by this time was more occupied with trying to help David that she didn't realize the magnitude of what was happening outside. It was only when she saw her husband lying on the ground with rocks all around him that she realized how serious things were. But David needed her help, she carried him together with some of the neighbours to a neighbours car and headed to the hospital. Soon they were at Matter hospital and David began getting medication. Niva borrowed a phone and called Faith. Faith was one of her good friend and she nearly fell down with shock when she heard Nivas voice. They had been looking for her and wondered where she had gone. Niva explained to her and asked her to come over at Matter hospital. When faith got there, Niva just put her hands around her and began to cry. She asked Niva to take her to her house and the hardest thing was to leave David as the doctors attended to him, but she had to get money to pay for his bills. She got to her house, looked around like she was seeing it for the first time, picked her cards and asked Faith to take her back to the hospital. David had not regained consciousness and Niva sat next to his bed waiting for him to recover. Suddenly, the machines attached to him began going crazy and nurses rushed in and asked her to excuse them. Niva walked out of the room crying. Why why why was this happening, just when she found someone who really cared for her and this happens to him. I love him Faith, she shouted , I really love him, I don't know whether I would want to live if anything happens to him. Niva was hysterical. After afew minutes, the nurse opened the door and looked at Niva, her face said it all, Niva screamed and fell on the floor.
Part 10
When she woke up, Niva found herself in a hospital bed, Faith was by her side sitting on the bed, she was crying. Niva sat down quickly asking faith whether she was dreaming or it was true. Tell me faith, tell me, is it true what I think happened, please don't lie to me. She pleaded with Faith to tell her the truth. Am afraid its true, David is no more, he passed away a few minutes after he was brought in the emergency wing. Niva screamed again, why why why God, why did you have to take him away from me. Just when I found someone who truly cares for me you go ahead and take him away, Niva cried out loud. She remembered how she had woken up in the hospital to see this stranger standing by her bedside. She didn't know who he was. Everyday during visiting hours he would come, just stand by her bed until the visitors were asked to go home. After afew visits, Niva had began longing to see this guy who visited her everyday. She would smile every time he came in. He brought her food, juices and stuff that she really needed while in hospital. When the time to be discharged came, she went home with him despite not knowing who he was just that he had saved her life by bringing her to the hospital and checking on her. Niva remembered how David had been good to her, cooked for her and how he refused to make love to her coz she didn't know herself. She knew deep within her heart that she could not find another man like David and this made her heart ache with pain. Why faith, why did he have to die, to make the matter worse and what makes me hurt even more, I never got the chance to tell him I love him, I loved him Faith and I didn't even know it. Who will take care of me now, Faith, who told you that my David is no more, Niva asked . When you collapsed, we carried you to this bed and I got a chance to talk to the doctor who was working on David. He told me that he had some internal injuries that led to his death. Niva cried again, it was like she was hoping against hope that her David was still alive. Meanwhile in a room within the hospital, David woke up, he looked around and saw that he was in the hospital. He tried to stand up and a hand pressed against his chest urging him not to stand. It was his mother, she was sitted on the bed waiting for him to wake up. Where is Niva, was the first question that came from Davids mouth.
Part 11
Edna is here, Davids mother replied. David turned to see Edna the gal his mother had been pushing him for a long time to marry. David had began entertaining the idea of marrying Edna but that thought went up in smoke when Niva entered the scene. He really wanted to see Niva and wondered why she was not there with him. Mum, where is the gal who brought me in the hospital, I need to talk to her. My son, you don't need to worry yourself about anything, you should focus on getting better. But if you want to know, she left with a man who I assumed was her husband. My son, stop thinking about her, she is trouble for you. You are here because of her my son, I need you to get better and focus on how you can raise a family with Edna here. David looked confused, how could Nivas husband come for her while the last time he saw him, he was lying in a pool of blood after his neighbours beat him. How could Edna just abandon him like that in the hospital. The only problem was, even if he wanted to contact her, he had no way of doing that, he didn't have her number, didn't know where she lived and didn't know a single friend of hers. Deep down in his heart, he knew he loved Niva, he longed to see her but kept quiet coz he had no strength to argue with his mum. Meanwhile, Niva was finally discharged from the hospital and taken home by Faith. There was a deafening silence in the house. Niva wondered where she was going to start from , the last time she saw her husband he was lying in a pool of blood, she felt nothing for him. Faith, tell me, where do I start. I had grown so used to David, I knew deep down I was going to be with him, where am I going to start. It took months before Niva could recover from the shock of Davids death. Everyday she imagined how it would have been if David was alive and there with her. She finally managed to go back to the office but even the work was not the same, something was missing. Niva went to her office as usual and told her secretary that she didn't want to be disturbed. She sank in her seat and closed her eyes feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders. She opened her eyes and closed them again. Am I dead or something, she asked herself. She opened her eyes again and closed them again, she was seeing something she was not supposed to be seeing unless she was dead. She opened her eyes wide and standing by her office door was David. He had a smile on his face. Niva thought she was seeing a ghost and nearly screamed. Just as she was wondering what was happening, her secretary came in and held David. Sir, you are not supposed to be here, you should have waited for me to let you in, please come with me. She started pulling David away from the door. Maria, Niva screamed, can you leave us alone and close that door. She stood up after Maria had closed the door and walked towards David crying. Is it really you my love .
Part 12
Is it really you my love, Niva repeated again, she walked close to David who had tears in his eyes. Am I seeing a ghost coz I can't believe what am seeing, Niva said touching David. She walked and put her hand on his cheek, David, am I dreaming, please please if am dreaming I don't want to ever wake up. No you are not dreaming my love, its me David, am here baby. But how can this be, Niva asked, you died in the hospital and your family took your body away and told me not to come to your funeral. Its a long story my love, I have been looking for you for a long time, I promised myself that I will look for you until I find you. No no no, Niva said crying, this is too good to be true, please Lord, don't do this to me, don't give me hopes and then take them away from me. No Niva, am here in flesh, David said running his hand on her hair. Close your eyes my love, David said. Niva closed her eyes and felt his lips on hers, the touch of his lips sent shivers down her spine, this was too good to be true. Can you feel my kiss, David asked. Yes I can, I can feel you David but I still can't believe its true. David put his hands around her body and pulled her close to him. She melted in his arm's. David, Niva called crying , please don't ever let me go. I promise you my love that I won't, David replied touching her hair. What happened David, please, tell me, what happened?.
