Boardman Food Pantry Thanks Community for Overwhelming Support After Devastating Fire

BOARDMAN, Ore.— After the Boardman Food Pantry was destroyed in a fire this past July, the outpouring of support from businesses, organizations, and community members has been nothing short of extraordinary.

The Pantry has received generous contributions from numerous sponsors and donors, ensuring services to families have not been interrupted.
Leading gifts include:
● Amazon – $100,000
● Umatilla Electric Cooperative & CoBank – $30,000
● PGE Foundation – $25,000

“These contributions—and the countless other gifts and acts of kindness—have left us overwhelmed with gratitude,” said Mary Killion, Board Chair of the Food Pantry. “Thanks to this support, and especially to Community Counseling Solutions for allowing us to operate from their Boardman building, we did not miss a single week of providing food for our community and were gifted over $255,000 in total for the event dinner and auction .”

The Boardman Food Pantry continues to serve families in need at an incredible scale. In 2024 alone, the Pantry supported:
592 households each month 23,844 individuals 7,108 food boxes distributed 474 volunteer hours each month (5,688 yearly) 237 volunteers each month.

The Boardman Food Pantry Board of Directors extends heartfelt thanks to every sponsor, volunteer, and neighbor who has stepped forward in this time of need; especially Brandon Hammond (event MC), Ken Grieb (event auctioneer), Alita Nelson (event photographer) and Dale Bates (event sound).
“Together, we are stronger than ever,” said Killion. “This tragedy has shown us the true spirit of community.”

City of Boardman Highlights Critical Impact of 2020 Infrastructure Improvement Bond During Recent Fire Response

By: City Manager Brandon Hammond

Boardman, OR — Thanks to the voter-approved infrastructure bond passed in May 2020, Boardman firefighters had the reliable water supply and pressure needed to effectively contain a recent blaze and protect the community from greater devastation.

Upgrades made possible by the bond—including larger water mains, a redundant loop in the system, a new Ranney collector, a million-gallon water tank, and a reliable backup supply—proved essential in ensuring emergency responders had the resources they needed when it mattered most.

“Had this happened six years ago, it would have been a completely different story,” said Chief Rick Stokoe of the Boardman Police Department. “At that time, we didn’t have the redundant loop, the backup supply, or the larger water lines that made such a critical difference during this fire.”

Beyond fire protection, the improvements enhance the overall reliability of Boardman’s water system for residents and businesses alike. The $18 million general obligation bond passed by citizens in 2020 funded a series of major projects, including:

Wastewater System Improvements (WWSI): Began April 2022 and completed October 2023 at a cost of $3.46 million. This project expanded the City’s wastewater treatment lagoons and refurbished three primary lift stations to support community growth.

Phase 1 Water System Improvements (WSI): Construction of Collector Well No. 3, completed June 2023 at a cost of $3.47 million.

Phase 2 Water System Improvements (WSI): CW3 Pump Station, Booster Pump Station, and a 1-million-gallon reservoir, completed March 2025 at a cost of $10.86 million. With these upgrades, the City can now withdraw its full 36 cubic feet per second surface water right and deliver up to 22,000 gallons per minute to meet peak demand.

City leaders emphasized that this investment has already demonstrated its value by strengthening Boardman’s ability to protect lives and property in times of emergency.

“Boardman residents can take pride in knowing that their decision to support these improvements has had a direct, positive impact on public safety,” added Chief Stokoe. “This investment in infrastructure has already proven its worth by helping safeguard our community.”

Friday night the Pirates defeated the Vernonia Loggers with a hard fought score of 18–12. It was a game full of determination, teamwork, and heart, proving that the Pirates are ready to make this season one to remember.

From the opening kickoff, the Pirates showed grit and energy, pushing forward with relentless effort. Every player on the field contributed, giving everything they had until the final whistle. The team’s unity and dedication shined through, both in their plays and in their support for one another.

One of the highlights of the night came from Eli Núñez, who poured his heart into the game and consistently put his team first. Núñez sustained an injury late in the first half, which affected the final play before halftime. However, in true Pirate spirit, he stayed strong and is already doing better. His teammates immediately rallied around him, reminding everyone that Riverside football is more than just a team it’s a family. In a touching moment, the Pirates took time to gather and pray together before heading back out to finish the game.

Key performances also came from senior Osmin Barrera, who made several excellent plays that helped the Pirates gain ground, and junior, Jeremias Calvillo, whose skill and hustle gave Riverside an edge throughout the night. Both players played pivotal roles in securing the win, showing leadership and composure under pressure.

The Pirates’ first win of the season is more than just a number on the scoreboard it’s a testament to their hard work, their bond as teammates, and their belief in each other. With this victory, the Pirates have built momentum, and their fans are eager to see what they’ll accomplish as the season continues.

This season marks the beginning of a new chapter for Riverside football with the arrival of coaches Elliott, West, and Shanks. Their leadership has already made a noticeable difference, bringing fresh techniques, new plays, and a renewed sense of confidence to the team. Much of the off season was spent building endurance, preparing the players not only to last through long games but also to adapt to the challenges of different weather conditions. That hard work was evident on the field.

Several Pirates stood out in the opener. Senior quarterback Sergio Ávalos stepped onto the field determined to lead, showing his strong arm and commitment to gaining yards through the air. Ávalos connected with Junior Jerimias Calvillo, who secured a touchdown reception that fired up the crowd and gave the Pirates valuable momentum. Seniors Jade Arriaga and Osmin Barrera also made a noticeable impact on offense, consistently pushing forward and gaining crucial yards throughout the game. Senior Fernando Medina showcased his impressive guarding skills, helping the Pirates hold their ground and push forward against the Rainers.

On defense, Senior, Colby Crowell made his presence known by sacking the opposing quarterback three times, setting the tone with his aggressive and disciplined play. Sophomore, Trevion Vannostern also contributed significantly on defense, applying consistent pressure that disrupted the Rainers’ offensive rhythm.

While the scoreboard may not have reflected the Pirates’ effort, their performance told a different story. With discipline, energy, and leadership from both players and coaches, this team has already shown growth and determination. If the season opener was any indication, the Pirates are on the rise and ready to make waves as the year continues.
