When I was starting my career, Jamal Edwards - the founder of SBTV - was the only relatable role model I could see in the UK. He wasn't from money, hadn't gone to a fancy university, and was a young Black man who had built an incredible business. He showed me what was possible: that a young Black man could be kind, successful, family-oriented, passionate, full of self-belief, and ambitious.
I remember the late nights on Skype and Twitter, trying to get Jamal to answer my questions. I watched his every move, searching for lessons in how he carried himself and built what he did. As my own career progressed, I got the chance to meet him, become friends with him, and get to know his mother, Brenda. After he passed, she called me and came to my house. She encouraged me to be for others what he was for me.
One of the greatest honours of being on Dragon's Den and building my own platform has been the chance to show young people - especially young Black men - that there are other paths, other goals, and other definitions of success. And that those paths are open to anyone willing to work hard and keep learning.
I do feel like I'm only just getting started on this part of my mission...
