For decades, I’ve worked through the chaos of natural disasters, helping others understand the power and unpredictability of Mother Nature. Yesterday, however, I found myself on the other side of the story—as a Tampa homeowner and evacuee—sharing the anxiety of waiting and preparing for a Category 5 hurricane.
When my friend, CBS4’s Tania Francois asked if I’d be willing to speak about seeking refuge at my mom’s home near Fort Lauderdale, I said “yes.”
For decades, I’ve shown compassion while asking others to relive their most difficult moments. This time, it was my turn to open up.
Many have asked if I miss being in the field during moments like these. The truth is, I’m still telling stories—with empathy and honesty. But now, I also have the privilege of stepping back, spending time with family, and praying for the safety of everyone in the storm’s path.
My interview closes this story. Thanks to veteran reporter Joan Murray and Adam, the videographer for braving the elements to keep us informed.
Thousands of people on Florida's west coast are leaving, paying attention to the warnings about the storm surge and potential impact of approaching Hurricane Milton.
