When Helene hit, our phones barely worked.
We used GMRS radios to stay in touch with nearby families until the lines came back.

If you’ve ever wondered how that works—or how to set up your own—
comment GMRS below and I’ll send you a PDF guide to get connected today!

Most folks stop once they buy the radios.
They charge them, test them once, and toss them in a drawer “for later.” (But Not Listeners!)

They know that's not how this works.

BUT, If your family doesn’t know which button to press, those radios are just paperweights.

Turn them on. Label the channels. Key up and make contact.

The new Btech GMRS-50 Pro has been solid so far — easy to use, plenty of punch — and paired with the PeliComms ¼-wave base antenna, it flat-out performs.

I’m also talking repeaters — how to reach them, why most fail, and how to test yours — plus what the new Prep Comms Network really is: a place for real folks to learn, fix problems, and keep getting better.

Full episode’s up now on the Prep Comms Podcast and YouTube.

73 y’all & God Bless.

Local ham club set up today for a Parks on the Air event. US2891

We stopped by for a few minutes — and I couldn’t help but grin when I spotted Chris running his QDX QRP rig with a Prep Comms mouse pad :)

The club had its full setup with the trailer, an IC-7300 station, and the gang calling CQ. (no pics)

I almost felt inclined to take the FT891 to a local park.... almost...

Still love seeing local radio alive and well — from HF to handhelds, it’s all about getting out, making contacts, and keeping the airwaves warm.

You ever work a POTA activation? Drop your park number or your go-to rig below.

It's Episode 3 of the GMRS Series. And we’re going through comments from YouTube — real stories from people actually using these radios in the field.
What works. What doesn’t.
Not theory, not hype. Just real-world GMRS reports from folks who’ve done it.

Many believe that more watts equals more range. But....It’s more about a better antenna and additional elevation!

In this week’s Prep Comms episode, I dig into what GMRS radios can really do in the real world — not the “36-mile” promise printed on the box.

We’ll talk about what changes your range, what doesn’t, and how a better antenna and a few feet of height can make more difference than another radio or more gear.

If you’ve ever wondered just how far GMRS can actually reach, this is your episode.

Most people think their radio is the problem.
It’s not; In most cases, it's the antenna.

That little rubber duck on top seems convenient, but it’s about the worst way to move a signal.
You can buy another radio, add watts, or chase the latest—but if your antenna can’t effectively get the signal out, none of that matters.

Swap it for something built and tuned then maybe get it a few feet higher.
You’ll hear the difference right away.

I’ve run this test with my fam...
All we did was change antennas—and, wow what a difference!

GMRS is the licensed “bigger brother” to the FRS walkie-talkies most families already own.
Same 22 channels — different rules, real range.

In the first episode of Season 4, I explain what GMRS actually is, how the simple $35 license covers your whole household, and why it’s become the most practical local-use radio service for families who want dependable communication when the phones quit.

Most families already own a pair of walkie-talkies.
They work… right up to the end of the driveway.

GMRS opens those same 22 channels to real, local communication — the kind that still works when the power blinks, the phones stall, or you just need to reach home from across town.

For $35, one FCC license covers your entire household for ten years.
It’s legal, reliable, and surprisingly easy to set up — especially with the free guide I built to walk you through every step.

There are rumors that beginning at 0000 hours (zulu) October 15th the National Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest will release several juvenile Sasquatch cryptids into the forests as part of a secret species reintroduction plan to restore bi0-diversity and celebrate National Sasquatch Awareness Day.

Amateur radio operators will have a unique opportunity to contact one or more of handlers caring for these cryptids commonly known as Bigfoot as they are reintroduced into their new surroundings. The handlers will identify themselves as W7B, W7I, W7G, W7F, W7O, and W7T and will be active from 0000 15 October through 2359 21 October on all bands using CW, SSB, FT-8/4, RTTY/PSK31 modes of communication.

We are also in contact with a small group of individuals in the southeastern part of the US who have been trailing a distant cousin of Bigfoot known as Skunk Ape. It is a small, dedicated group of men who will be sending out reports during the same period using the callsign W4S. It would be a bonus to their selfless efforts and surely keep their spirits up while trailing this very elusive cryptid through southern swamps.

You can support the volunteers caring for these precious cryptids and help them celebrate National Sasquatch Awareness Day by making a contact with each station during this special event!
