BREAKING FREE: A Call to Reclaim Your Life from Societal Norms.

As a wife, it is your duty to please your husband even if it takes away your happiness.
As a husband, it is your responsibility to keep your wife happy even when you think you've done enough.
As a son, the family's burdens are on your shoulder and you have no reason to complain.
As a daughter, it's your responsibility to make sure everyone at home is happy and well taken care of, even if you are not.
As a neighbor, it's your duty to spread love around the neighborhood.
As a sibling, it is left to you to keep kinship tie firmly tight.
As the oldest child, the whole family's responsibilities lies in your hand, even when you are married.

All of these do no good than overwhelming us.

It's high time we diversify our viewpoints as regards what's right and wrong in the complex societal and cultural dictates of our society.

Many face a lot of dilemmas in trying to balance their responsibilities with their own well-being. It's a struggle that's as old as time. Challenge those societal norms and expectations and prioritize your mental and emotional health.

You do not have to compromise your happiness and peace of mind for societal and cultural expectations.

I think we all know what our responsibilities are, even without being told. Why allow the society have a say in what goes on in our lives?

No matter the tradition, the human soul is nothing other than AIR. It takes nothing but seconds to leave the body.
Why do things that take too much of our energy all in the name of SOCIETAL and CULTURAL NORMS?

Remember, lots of crisis arising in the world is as a result of the so-called SOCIETY and CULTURE.

We all have lives to live without having to be forced to be vulnerable.
You do not have to be OVERWHELMED or to be VULNERABLE.

Desist from the societal brainwash and live your life with EASE.

Today, my younger brother called me and said, "Sis Salmah, let's make this house. I've downloaded a video on mummy's phone already, to serve as a guideline."

Then immediately, I agreed. On a norms, I wouldn't, because It's either I stay in my room, not talking to anyone, but write instead, or I just sleep (my introversion is definitely not from here😆). But this time around, I took it upon myself to make this holiday not just productive, but fun-filled!🤗

I immediately took money from my purse and gave them to get the material, (had to be a responsible big sis😅).

This house took us 2 hours to make, and finally! It's done!💃💃💃🤭

There's a saying that, "When a child falls, he looks ahead. When an elder falls, he looks at his back."

Meaning, the child is looking at what is ahead of him, and an elder looks at what they've left behind.

Nowadays, even persons not up to the age of 20 now look back when they fall. Meaning, even at young age, each and everyone has gone through one or two things. We've all left behind one experience or the other that has shaped us to be who we are today.

*GOOD OLD DAYS.*

I miss those days when taking meat from the pot without Mums' permission feels illegal.
I miss those days when the only thing that could save you from Mums' beating is if you disappear, because fainting would aggravate your suffering.
I miss those days when Dad is the only one who can save you from continuous beating. You get to enjoy that opportunity before he leaves for work, because when he does, your beating would start from Mums' pinches.
I miss those days where visiting a friend was the greatest crime any child would commit.
I miss those days when you saw your Mum beating your siblings and that sends a message you are the next, even when you're innocent. Then you start stuffing yourself with multiple clothes.
I miss those days when you could misbehave all you like in the morning without mum saying a word, bit waits to deal with you at night when no one can stop her.
I miss those days when Dad tells you to go on your knees and forgets you there without beating you.
I miss those days when my sister started using lip gloss but my Mum didn't react. Unknown to her, she had already been reported to her class teacher who beat the hell out of her.
I miss those days when Fathers would not beat you for years but the day they beat you, you'll almost meet your creator.

Why am I only missing those sad days? The hardest moments of childhood.

I see how kids act nowadays and all I can do is thank my parents for those totures.
Isn't it funny how the beatings really align with lifes' challenges?
I mean, Mum beats like there would not be a tomorrow. At the end, she gets tired and leaves you there to cry. Here you are, all grown up, thanking your Mum for those trainings because you saw how it shaped your life. What does life do?
Life knocks you down and all you feel is that's all, but instead, God takes you out of that situation and it feels like that never happened.

THE DREAM DEFERRED.

No one sees, no one knows. Or maybe they knew, but ignored. Pain now looks like a secret, that shouldn't be exposed.

When opening my eyes feels shot, and closing them felt opened. Closing the eye, scary. Opening it, worse. With fears all over me. What if I'm the next?!

What's more to a life of pain, which no one can feel or help one in it? Is that a life or what?

Am I even sure I'm living? Oh, maybe I'm a "living dead".

For my pains are unseen, my sorrows, left to remain. Of course, I'm a Palestinian. Why should I expect to live?! It's been that way before I was born!

At least, that's your expectations of me. I have a dream too! Which is now restricted to death. My future is certain to be the "tomorrow" we all know, that's if I'm lucky enough to not have died before the next day.
Is this really what life is? If yes, then I wonder if death feels like life?

SOCIETAL PARADOX.

Welcome to my country where a fat Rich kid is called BIGGIE, and a poor one, OROBO.
Welcome to my country, where the most patient dog will die of hunger, because bone can't eat bone.
Welcome to a world where SHYNESS seem embarrassing, and SHAMELESSNESS , the way of life.
Welcome to my country, where a rude ugly lady is MANNERLESS, and a beautiful one, BADDIE.
Welcome to my country where anyone eating the poorest of food becomes a SUSPECT,
and the one eating the most expensive of foods is an ODOGWU .
Welcome to my country, where a rich lady is a PR******TE, and the poor is to be INITIATED .

HOW TO BE NORMAL.

1. When you message someone for the first time, try as much as possible to be a human. Greet the person, followed by your reason for messaging.

2. When you're meeting someone for the first time, don't ask them what their name is, be polite, by greeting first and then, try to talk about other things before asking for their names.

3. Don't depend on your freedom of speech. Remember, that's between you and your government.

4. There's a plug connecting the mouth to the brain. It's not always connected but try as hard as possible to make sure it's connected before opening your mouth to speak.

5. You're in love but not ready for marriage? Put yourself in prayer, and the person. Don't string each other along. Remember, you're still single till the day you get married.

6. Don't be too polite. If anyone needs to be lashed, lash them unapologetically.

DEMURE:
Reserved, shy, and modest. Mostly used by women.

CUTESY:
Cute to a sentimental extent.

SO CUTESY:
Trying hard or too hard to be appealing.

"So Cutesy, so demure🤭", used after the statement, "Am going on vacations, after my exams."

Well, I'm not surprised. When *I am* and *I'm* is being spelt as, *am*, then, it's normal to use those words incorrectly.

GET IT RIGHT!

I have squatted down for a very long time; now I have PINS AND NEEDLES (=Yorùbá: pajá pajá). ✔️

Pins and needles: a tingling or prickling sensation, felt in a limb when a lack of circulation is relieved and in other situations.

It's not "i have kill dog kill dog"🙄😏.

THE LIFE OF AN AFRICAN SOLDIER.

If I fall, I dust myself off and continue from where I stopped. It's not easy. The pressure is overwhelming, and discomfort is my constant companion. But this is Africa – failure is not an option. Lives depend on me, even if it means sacrificing my own.

Dead bodies and chopped limbs no longer traumatize me; they're a grim reminder of my reality. I carry the weight of my nation on my shoulders, ever ready to protect it. Even in death, I can only hope for a befitting burial – a luxury not all of us can expect. My family's well-being hinges on the pension they'll receive from the government, if they're lucky.

This is the life of an African soldier – a never-ending cycle of sacrifice, duty, and resilience.

I don't know if it's just me. Whenever people shout their mother's name, i shout my Dad's. Don't misinterpret that. Mothers her Gems and should be praised all through but we seem to forget the fathers.

My Dad would literally worry about us all night but act stoic in our presence. My Dad would disturb my mum to call me, each day at school but wouldn't do the same. He would make sure to find out I'm okay, through my mum, but he won't call 😅🥹. I had told him that we have a lot in common. He's a writer, I'm a passionate one too. He just answered with, "congrats" but i know deep down in him, he was really excited. Whenever i win a price or finish a new piece, i would show him and he would tell me "nice", just that, and face his work. This same man would ask me to send this write-up to his DM. The next thing I'd see his him publishing it on his newspaper and the family group. I remembered how i used to hate this. I'll be like, "why will he send it to family? Why did he publish it? I'm not ready for that yet." Then, my mum would say, "don't you know he's proud of what you did?". Through him, i realized that men would always choose to remain stoic, but deep down, they are softer than females🥹.

I think father's day should also have its day celebrated more than 50 times a year.

This is to all fathers out there🥂❤️.
