Each year during EMS Week, MIEMSS takes time to shine a light on the amazing individuals and programs that make a real difference in emergency medical care across our state. Through the Maryland Stars of Life Awards, we recognize outstanding dedication, innovation, and service in EMS. We also honor some the state’s youngest heroes with the Right Care When It Counts Awards - a special recognition for children and teens who have demonstrated remarkable bravery and presence of mind during an emergency.

Emergency medical dispatchers (EMDs) are often the unsung heroes - the calm and collected voice on the other end of the line when everything feels chaotic on scene. Today, we have traveled to Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department to recognize an outstanding group of Baltimore County 9-1-1 Center EMDs for their handling and coordination of a mass casualty response involving over 100 first responders from EMS, Police, and Fire departments on December 17, 2024. We will also recognize two young people - a Howard County teenager and an 8-year-old Carroll County resident - for their quick thinking and actions in providing “The Right Care When It Counts” to those in need during two separate medical emergencies.
