Celine Dion is coming back to a Paris stage, and the city has already put up the billboards.

Her residency at Nanterre, just outside the capital, runs 16 shows. The metro ads set the tone: one reads "Let yourself be transported to Celine's concert," another simply says "We won't leave without you."

"A Bit of Light" is Iranian director Ali Asgari's story of a doctor who plans to end his life after being arrested and stripped of his medical practice, only to rediscover reasons to keep living during one last day with his family. Its makers brought it to the Venice Film Festival on Friday, describing a society numbed by repeated tragedy.

Actor Misagh Zareh told reporters that helplessness weighs heaviest. "Even for a small Instagram post against the death penalty, the next day they summoned me to court," he said, speaking through a translator. Screenwriter Shadmehr Rastin said the past year, including a crackdown on protesters and two wars, has left people emotionally exhausted: "We are anaesthetised. It's as if we don't feel anything any more."

Asgari still lives and shoots in Iran, though he was briefly banned from filmmaking after premiering "Terrestrial Verses" in Cannes in 2023. He said the title points to how survival there depends on small acts of endurance. "We don't have the strength to light our path with a very large light," he said. "We need small things in our lives to keep going, and those small things are illuminated one by one."

"A Bit of Light" is one of 21 films competing for Venice's Golden Lion, which will be presented on Saturday.

Diane von Furstenberg was back on a runway Thursday for the first time in nearly a decade, sitting front row on New York's High Line as her label opened New York Fashion Week.

The show marked the debut of new artistic director Henry Zankov, who first joined DVF as a knitwear designer in 2014 and spent four years there before launching his own brand. He told Reuters he wants to carry forward von Furstenberg's legacy through "body language and sensuality and seduction and fabric and freedom."

The signature wrap dress stayed at the center of the collection, joined by wrap tops and flowing capes, but Zankov pushed harder on prints, texture and color: animal prints against blocks of bright color, clashing patterns, metallic flashes of shine. His read on who he's dressing is broad. "I think all women are modern," he said. "The clothes are like tools and you use them how you want to." Von Furstenberg founded the house in 1972 to empower women through style.

"Not a single frame of Renzo was filmed for this documentary."

That's director Francesco Carrozzini describing "Be Brave," the film about Diesel founder Renzo Rosso that premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday. AI generated the video throughout, including scenes where the older Rosso appears to be there in flesh and bone. Real interviews with fashion editor Anna Wintour and designer John Galliano are the exceptions, filmed conversations set against stylized or retouched backdrops.

Rosso, who grew up in rural northeastern Italy and turned a small denim company into one of fashion's most recognizable brands, embraced the idea the moment he heard it would rely on AI. "I like doing things before everybody else," he said, recalling that he was among the first Italian entrepreneurs to adopt fax machines and e-commerce. The film even recreated his childhood, for which no footage exists. "It brought tears to my eyes seeing myself as a child speaking," he said.

The technology has loomed over this year's festival, with filmmakers and actors including George Clooney warning about its risks to creativity and jobs. Producer Lorenzo Mieli said the industry needs to engage rather than reject: "We need to regulate it, control it, prevent exploitation and prevent the disappearance of professions. But we also need to understand it very well." Rosso drew his own line. "Creativity is absolutely not replaced by the machine. Human beings remain fundamental."

"NAZA" got a 25-minute standing ovation at its Venice premiere on Thursday, the longest of this year's festival so far. The documentary takes its title from an Israeli military term for the expected number of "collateral casualties" in air strikes, and it's built almost entirely on anonymous testimony from intelligence officers and soldiers.

One officer describes "mass killing on an industrial scale." Others detail an AI-assisted targeting system that pulled data from thousands of hacked mobile phones, where a phrase like "daddy's home" picked up on a child's phone could be enough to trigger a strike. "We show in our film a targeting system that is, by design, targeting people in civilian spaces, in their family homes," director Yuval Abraham told Reuters. "Sometimes it can be 500 NAZA ... destroying entire villages or entire neighbourhoods."

Abraham and co-director Rachel Szor won an Oscar last year for "No Other Land." Every interview here is filmed at night on Tel Aviv rooftops, with the destruction in Gaza, roughly 60 km away, shown only briefly at the end. "We wanted to show how life in Tel Aviv goes on," Szor said. Gaza health authorities say more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed in the campaign, which began after the October 2023 Hamas attack that killed around 1,200 people in Israel. Israel says it has gone to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties; the IDF did not respond to Reuters' request for comment about the film.
