Beats Without Borders will take you places near and far through music. Join hosts Alasha Al-Qudwah and Emmett Pepper as they guide you on Charleston's new, radio station, WTSQ 88.1 FM, The Status Quo! Expect to hear music rooted in non-American folk traditions, but also music emblematic of the 21st Century that started in one tradition and re-interpreted in another, and then maybe gets re-reinterpreted somewhere else.

This is a band that Emmett was exposed to at this year's Big Ears Festival. The Costa Rican singer (living in Brooklyn), Isabel Crespo Pardo, had a great solo set and this trio, Sinonó, had a separate set. The music is described as being "middle of the night music" on their bandcamp page, and that works for us.

All proceeds from the sales of this just-released single go to an organization supporting women in Darfur. You can buy it here:

Closer to Charleston than Morgantown, this gem of a venue in Blacksburg has some great multicultural and international programming. This season is great. Mariza from Portugal playing fado is a highlight for me, but there are multiple shows that seem really awesome.

Thanks to Crusing The Boulevard WTSQ 88.1 Charleston WV WWSA 96.9 St Albans WV's Rick Skeen for the heads up about 50 Arab 78 records at an estate sale on the East End that Emmett grabbed. Emmett might need to play some of them during the April vinylthon if shellac is allowed to be played, too!
