The events surrounding Raila Odinga’s burial have once again exposed the deep political rifts that continue to shape Kenya’s leadership landscape. The noticeable absence of several leaders from the Mt. Kenya region did not go unnoticed. To many, it symbolized how national unity often gives way to silent political calculations and regional loyalties.

Yet, moments like this should remind us that Kenya’s strength lies in shared respect beyond politics or tribe. Whether one agreed or disagreed with Raila, his long journey in public life deserves national recognition. Healing as a country will only come when leaders rise above divisions and show solidarity, especially in moments of national mourning.

1. Boniface Mwangi Declares Presidential Bid for 2027

Human rights activist and protest leader Boniface Mwangi has officially announced his intention to run for president in the 2027 elections. Known for his vocal criticism of corruption and mobilizing youth-led protests, Mwangi framed his campaign as a call for a “third liberation,” urging especially young Kenyans to reclaim their country. His announcement follows repression of anti-government protests. His bid will be vetted by the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission, amid other emerging contenders such as Senator Okiya Omtatah, former Chief Justice David Maraga, and incumbent President William Ruto.

2. S&P Upgrades Kenya’s Credit Rating to ‘B’

Global credit agency Standard & Poor’s has raised Kenya’s long-term sovereign credit rating from B- to B, acknowledging improved external liquidity driven by strong export performance and increased remittances. The outlook remains stable, with projected economic growth at 5.6% in 2025—outpacing both the finance ministry’s forecast of 5.3% and the central bank’s 5.2%.

3. UK to Pay Compensation for 2021 Wildfire in Kenya

The UK government has agreed to pay £2.9 million (approximately $3.9–4 million) to more than 7,000 Kenyans and an environmental group. The payment follows a 2021 wildfire in Lolldaiga Hills reportedly caused by a British military exercise, which damaged over 12,000 acres and caused one death. Although historically significant—marking the first time the UK was held liable in Kenyan civil court—the compensation is widely seen as insufficient; some individuals will receive as little as £129. This has sparked public outrage and renewed calls to review the 2015 Defense Cooperation Agreement with the UK.

Here’s an update on the joint UDA–ODM parliamentary meeting held yesterday, Monday, August 18, 2025, in Karen:

---

What Happened at the Meeting

Purpose & Participants
The meeting was convened at the KCB Leadership Centre in Karen and co-chaired by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, bringing together MPs from both UDA and ODM with expectations of fostering unity and exploring a political alliance.

President Ruto’s Address
President Ruto delivered a scathing critique of Parliament’s integrity, accusing some legislators of turning it into a "free market" — alleging that MPs demanded up to KSh 150 million from county governors under impeachment threat and KSh 10 million each to pass the Money Laundering Bill. When pressed to name names, he stated, “I will not name them. I will arrest them.”

Response from MPs and ODM
Some MPs pushed back, framing such demands as mere lobbying, prompting ODM’s Raila Odinga to counter: “Extortion is not lobbying.” The debate also veered into concerns over misuse of the NG-CDF, though government majority MPs defended their role as merely oversight.

Criticism from Within
Former PS and political commentator Moses Kuria sharply criticized the meeting. He dismissed it as a transactional “dowry” paid by UDA to ODM, lamenting that other parties within Kenya Kwanza and Azimio were sidelined. He warned that such transactional politics undermine the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) process and risk repeating the failures of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
