On the 28th of July, 1920, Mohun Bagan was booked to play against Jorabagan Club in the Coochbehar Cup. Jorabagan conveyed their starting eleven, however, defender Sailesh Bose was dropped from the team for undisclosed reasons. The then VP of Jorabagan, Suresh Chandra Chaudhuri, approached to Bose to be included for the line-up but got rejected. Following his solicitation not being invited, Chaudhuri left the club alongside Raja Manmatha Nath Chaudhuri, Ramesh Chandra Sen and Aurobinda Ghosh. They at that point proceeded to shape East Bengal Club as a Sports and Cultural Association in Jorabagan, on 1 August 1920. The club was named East Bengal since the organizers hailed from the eastern part of Bengal.
Since then, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan have been two most prominent football clubs of entire south Asia and according to BBC, the derby between them is the fiercest in Asia.
