I started the indie label Accretions 40 years ago. Accretions is an artist-based, independent music label focused on experimental, improvisational, and global sounds.
I was living in San Diego, California at that time. A group of friends and I decided to start an arts and culture magazine, and we started collecting various materials: articles, poetry, short stories, art, photography and cartoons. We decided to include a flexi disc in the first issue so I produced a flexi disc by my friend's band Guam Caucus. However, that project fell apart. So, embracing the DIY spirit of the time, I started Accretions as a label.
Initially, we released a 7-inch single, cassettes, 12-inch LPs and CDs by my band Burning Bridges. In 1994, I released Marcelo Radulovich's debut album and began producing other artists in earnest. Marcelo and I then co-produced several titles and the label became better known. In 2000, the founding of the Trummerflora Collective spawned an increase in activity and the label flourished as a home for many unconventional artists. Since returning to Japan in 2008, I have continued Accretions with former collective members Hans Fjellestad and Damon Holzborn.
The music industry has changed dramatically over the past 40 years, but we continue to seek out exciting new sounds.
Our roster includes international artists Fred Frith, George E. Lewis, Carla Kihlstedt, Barre Phillips, Carl Stone, Bill Horist and Nortec Collective, as well as Japanese artists Seiichi Yamamoto, haco, Jyoji Sawada, Risa Takeda, Takashi Ueno, Yumiko Tanaka, Chu Makino and Shizka Ueda.
