Born free on a small Maryland farm in 1731, Benjamin Banneker was brilliant, curious—and unafraid to test boundaries. Although his classroom education lasted only a short time, he continued learning on his own.

One of his earliest feats was creating America’s first striking clock, modeled on a pocket watch that a friend lent him. Later, he turned his attention to the sky. His ability to chart star locations would help him map the boundaries of Washington, D.C.
