The level of scrutiny of journalism from the public and outside entities is greater than ever before, and this requires news organizations to think of new ways to build trust, make their work stand out,...

Yes, this page has been quiet, but now I'm back with a great correction from The Economist:

Correction: An earlier version of this article claimed that journalists at Bloomberg Businessweek could be disciplined for sipping a spritzer at work. This is not true. Sorry. We must have been drunk on the job.

Another busy day at the officeAMERICA has a proud history of drinking on the job. Craftsmen who built the first government buildings in the 17th century were sometimes paid in brandy.

If you write a story that makes note of a name being misspelled, you should make sure you don't also misspell the name. Doubly true if the name belongs to famed editor Ben Bradlee.

I don’t claim to have the answer, but I’d suggest we often overlook one crucial element in the discussion of trust: the human aspect. Also, join me, Jay Rosen and Roy Peter Clark for a live chat about this issue today at 12:30 pm EDT: http://goo.gl/dfpYy

A very bad misquote by the Australian:

Due to a production error, a quote attributed to Lieutenant Colonel Ghulam Jehlani Shafiq in a report in The Weekend Australian on Saturday (“Afghanistan battles scourge of corruption”, page 16) was altered to change its meaning. Colonel Jehlani did not say: “It’s not like 25 years ago. I was killing everybody.” In fact, he said: “It’s not like 25 years ago I was killing everybody. At that time too we tried not to have civilian casualties.” The Australian apologises for the error.

An apology from the Daily Mail:

A column by Amanda Platell on 17 September 2011 referred to Sheryl Gascoigne as a ‘gold digger’ and as ‘sleazy and degrading company’ for the other participants in the Leveson Inquiry. We now accept that these allegations are entirely unfounded and went beyond fair comment. We have sincerely apologised to Ms Gascoigne in court for the distress caused and have agreed to pay her substantial damages and costs.

Huge efforts are made to ensure our journalism meets the highest possible standards of accuracy but it is inevitable that mistakes do occur.
