FOUR ILLEGAL MINERS DIE IN SHIWANG’ANDU MINE COLLAPSE
Tragedy struck in Shiwang’andu District after four illegal miners died when a pit wall collapsed at New Scene Gold Mine in Chief Mukwikile’s area.
The incident happened on Sunday, October 5, 2025, between 16:00 and 17:00 hours and was reported to Shiwang’andu Police Station on Monday morning by Mr. Richard Simutami, 43, a security officer at Chimboto Gold Mine.
According to police, the four miners were conducting illegal gold mining activities when the pit walls caved in, burying them alive.
"The victims were reportedly warned of visible cracks on the pit walls moments before the collapse, but they continued mining," said Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga in a statement obtained by Smart Eagles.
Mr. Hamoonga said rescue efforts were immediately launched after the collapse, but by the time the bodies were retrieved around 05:20 hours on Monday, all four miners had died.
The deceased have been identified as Cephas Mwansa of Phillip Village, Chief Mukwikile; Duncan Viemba and Kanene Lisenga, both believed to be from Lusaka; and a man only identified as Peter, also believed to be from Lusaka.
Police inspected the bodies and found no visible injuries except for Peter, who had blood oozing from the nose.
Three of the bodies were taken to Mpika Urban Clinic Mortuary, while Mwansa’s body was deposited at Matumbo Rural Health Centre Mortuary awaiting burial.
Mr. Hamoonga said an inquiry file has been opened to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
He has since warned members of the public against engaging in illegal mining activities, saying such operations pose serious risks to life.
"The Zambia Police Service wishes to urge members of the public to desist from engaging in illegal mining, as these activities expose them to grave danger. Mining should only be conducted within the confines of the law and with proper safety measures in place," Mr. Hamoonga said.
