Tracie and Emily take us back to the early 1980's to revisit the obscure sword-and-sorcery fantasy film that is The Beastmaster.

While the girls fondly remember Dar's furry ferret friends, they were puzzled by the over-the-top level of male nudity. They also discuss some of the ugly cultural commentary about race, women, romance, consent and sexuality.

No need for bat-people hearing, Just put on your your headphones and listen in to this week's episode of Deep Thoughts About Stupid Sh*t.

On this week's episode of Deep Thoughts, Tracie Guy-Decker shares her thoughts about The Beastmaster, an obscure fantasy film from the early 1980s that was a staple of our formative years because it was on regular rotation on HBO (which people jokingly claimed stood for "Hey! Beastmaster's on!").

Emily Guy Birken remembered the Beastmaster's animal companions with fondness, especially his little ferret friends, and the over-the-top level of male nudity was certainly... ahem...interesting, but the movie offers some ugly cultural commentary and weirdly subverts storytelling expectations by continuing past the third act, making the short film feel way too long.

Still, there are many pretty people, cool animals, and fascinating storytelling details to admire in this forgotten 80s cult favorite.

Do you remember The Beastmaster? Were you around when it was a regular part of HBO's lineup?

As always, a big thank you to Resonate Recordings for producing our show!

Emily and Tracie saw this movie together and it sparked their log-standing fixation on Hugh Grant. Find why Emily thinks Hugh is the embodiment of the word diffident.

On a hot day like today wouldn't it be nice to be on a ship on the ocean feeling the cool breeze? As long as that ship is not the Titanic.

Join Emily as she introduces Tracie to the 1997 blockbuster movie Titanic. Learn why Emily appreciates the fan theory that Jack is actually a trans man.

Mrs. Doubtfire is on Tracie's mind in this week's episode of Deep Thoughts About Stupid Sh*t. She found the movie more cringe worthy than she remembered with feminist stereotypes represented throughout.

Dig beneath the heavy makeup and prosthetics and you will find some sweet moments and genuine humor. Until then, carpe podcast!

This week on Deep Thoughts About Stupid Sh*t, Emily revisits Mannequin—the 1987 romcom that’s as weightless as dandelion fluff but sneaks in surprisingly progressive q***r representation.

Meshach Taylor’s Hollywood Montrose isn’t just comic relief; he’s a hero, a friend, and a rare example of joyful gay visibility in ’80s movies.

Careful—if you stand too still while you listen, someone might think you’re a mannequin.

"That’s so funny I forgot to laugh!"

In this week's Throwback Thursday episode of Deep Thoughts About Stupid Sh*t, Emily and Tracie welcome Mallory Henson for a deep dive into Pee-wee’s Playhouse.

Mallory shows how Paul Reubens built a world of joyful chaos and taught kids about acceptance and curiosity.

Sure, a cringey joke or two didn’t age well, but Reubens’ heart was always in making people happy.

Connect the headphones, la-la-la-la, and join us for the nostalgia trip.

On this week's episode of Deep Thoughts About Stupid Sh*t, Tracie takes a deep dive into Weird Science - the John Hughes teen comedy that reimagines the Greek myth of Pygmalion and reinforced the 1980's idea that computers were magic and that teenage love interests are prizes to be won.

No need to wear a bra on your head. Just some headphones and a soft spot for vintage teen comedies will do.
