Research is discovering ever more fascinating facts about the intricate relationship between plants and honeybees. We have known for some time about the bees’ clever ways of exploiting flowers by communicating their availability to fellow bees through the waggle dance. Very recently, an Israeli researcher found that plants are doing their part to attract pollinators. Colourful petals and attractive scents lure the bees to the nectar source, but now this researcher has found that when flowers ‘hear’ the buzz of bees, they increase the sugar content of their nectar. Excreting sugar into the nectar demands much energy from the plants, so it makes sense that they only do it when it is likely to have the desired effect of attracting more bees.
